Bill of sale guide

Alaska vehicle bill of sale

Alaska doesn't require a bill of sale, but it's your record of the sale. No notary is needed. Here's what to put on one and how to sell a car in Alaska, from signing the title to filing the Notice of Vehicle Sale for Transfer.

Make your bill of sale

Fill in each section, then print it on letter-size paper or save it as a PDF. No account needed.

What are you selling?

Alaska doesn't require a notary for a bill of sale. You can still add a notary block.

Seller

Add everyone named on the title as an owner. If their names are joined by "and", each one signs.

Buyer
Vehicle

It's on the title and registration, at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, and on the label in the driver's door jamb.

Odometer

Whole miles only. Federal rules say no tenths.

The seller states that this reading:

Choose the one that's true. Mechanical limits is for an odometer that has rolled past its highest number.

This doesn't replace the odometer section on the title. If the title has one, fill it in too.

Sale
Type of transfer

Print two copies. You and the buyer sign both, and each keeps one.

Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. The VIN lookup sends only the VIN.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your state's requirements before you sign.

Do you need a bill of sale in Alaska?

Alaska does not require a bill of sale. DMV says a bill of sale is not valid for ownership transfer; the signed title transfers ownership. DMV still suggests having the buyer sign one that shows the sale date, as protection if the buyer gets parking tickets after the sale. A buyer in a private sale can also use a bill of sale as proof of purchase to get temporary registration with a V1 application.

What a Alaska bill of sale must include

Alaska lists these items:

  • Vehicle serial number (VIN) and description
  • Buyer's and seller's printed names
  • Date of sale
  • Signatures of the buyer and seller

How to sell a car in Alaska

  1. Sign the title where indicated and complete the assignment to the buyer. If the owners are joined by AND, all must sign; with OR, one owner signs.
  2. Enter the odometer reading and leave no blank spaces in the assignment. If the title has no odometer space, use Form V6.
  3. Give the title to the buyer when you deliver the vehicle.
  4. Remove personalized or specialty plates. Standard plates stay on the vehicle.
  5. Report the sale within 10 days: send DMV the Notice of Vehicle Sale for Transfer from the bottom of the title, or report it online.
  6. Have the buyer sign a bill of sale with the VIN and description, both printed names, the date and both signatures.

Where to sign a Alaska title

Sign where indicated on the title and complete the Assignment of Vehicle Title by Owner to the buyer, including the odometer statement. Leave no blank spaces. If owners are joined by AND, all sign; with OR, one owner signs. The title signature does not need a notary in Alaska.

Notice of Vehicle Sale for Transfer in Alaska

Required. File Notice of Vehicle Sale for Transfer (bottom of the original title) within 10 days of the sale. You can file it online. It protects you if the buyer gets tickets or tolls, or abandons the car, before retitling it.

What happens to your license plates when you sell a car in Alaska?

Alaska law says the registration expires when the vehicle is sold, but the plates stay on the vehicle (AS 28.10.271(a)). Remove personalized or specialty plates; the buyer gets new plates at no added charge. You can move personalized or specialty plates to another vehicle in your name for $5. Standard plates cannot be transferred.

Inspection, odometer and sales tax in Alaska

Inspection. None tied to the sale. The Department of Environmental Conservation says Alaska's vehicle emissions inspection programs are not active: Anchorage's program was discontinued March 1, 2012, and Fairbanks' was suspended January 1, 2010. AS 28.10.271(d) still has emissions certificate rules for sales in designated inspection areas.

Odometer disclosure. The seller writes the odometer reading in the title assignment, and the buyer signs to acknowledge it (49 CFR 580). If the title has no space, use Form V6. DMV's mailed-in title page lists exemptions for a model year 2010 or older vehicle at least 10 years old that was transferred before January 1, 2021, and for model year 2011 or newer vehicles at least 20 years old. Without a disclosure, the odometer is recorded as Unknown on future titles.

Sales tax. DMV pages list no state sales tax on private vehicle sales. When the buyer registers, a local motor vehicle registration tax (MVRT) may be due, based on where the owner lives, the vehicle type and model year. It is paid with the registration fee, which is $100 for two years for a passenger vehicle (DMV 2026 fee and MVRT chart).

What the buyer does next

The buyer has 30 days to apply for a new title. The title fee is $15.
