What you get from a Dodge VIN decoder
A Dodge VIN decoder is only as good as its data. This one reads NHTSA's vPIC database, built from the VIN information Stellantis and other manufacturers file with the government, and returns the model year, model, trim, series, body style, drive type, engine size and cylinders, GVWR class, doors and assembly plant. When Stellantis reported them, it also lists safety equipment such as air bag locations.
Mistakes get caught first. VINs never use the letters I, O or Q, so the tool rejects them, and it checks the ninth character against the other sixteen before it looks anything up.
Recalls come from NHTSA too, as campaigns for that year, make and model. Whether the fix was already done on this car is a different question, answered by NHTSA's VIN recall search.
Dodge VIN chart: what each position means
Current Dodges share Stellantis WMIs with Chrysler, Jeep and Ram, so position 5 does the brand work. Codes for positions 4 to 8 are from the 2027 FCA US guide; the right column follows a 2016 Durango.
| Position | On a current Dodge | 1C4RDJAG7GC308692 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Where the builder is: 1 FCA US, 2 FCA Canada, 3 FCA Mexico | 1 |
| 2 | C on shared Stellantis codes; Dodge's own WMIs (1B3, 1D7, 2D4 and others) use B or D | C |
| 3 | Type: 3 passenger car, 4 MPV, 6 truck, 7 incomplete vehicle | 4 |
| 4 | Restraints and GVWR: C on the 2027 Charger; R (6,001 to 7,000 lb) or S (7,001 to 8,000 lb) on the 2027 Durango | R |
| 5 | Brand: D = Dodge | D |
| 6 | Line and drive: Durango H RWD, J AWD; Charger A gas, B electric Daytona | J |
| 7 | Series and body: Durango D GT, C GT Hemi V8, G R/T 392, H SRT Hellcat, F Pursuit or Enforcer; Charger P, M (2-door) and N, R (4-door) gas, C, D, F, G Daytona | A |
| 8 | Engine: G 3.6L V6, T 5.7L V8, J 6.4L V8, 9 6.2L supercharged V8; Charger P 3.0L turbo I6, K 400-volt electric | G |
| 9 | Check digit (0 to 9 or X) | 7 |
| 10 | Model year: G 2016 ... T 2026, V 2027 | G |
| 11 | Plant: C Jefferson North Assembly, Detroit; R Windsor Assembly, Ontario | C |
| 12 | Start of the plant sequence number | 3 |
| 13 | Sequence number | 0 |
| 14 | Sequence number | 8 |
| 15 | Sequence number | 6 |
| 16 | Sequence number | 9 |
| 17 | End of the sequence number | 2 |
Position 7 letters are from 2027 and were not all used the same way in 2016; the decoder reads each VIN against its own year's data.
Example: a 2016 Dodge Durango VIN decoded
This Durango was listed on GSA Auctions, the federal surplus site. Its VIN, 1C4RDJAG7GC308692, returns this from vPIC:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Year, make, model | 2016 Dodge Durango |
| Trim | SXT |
| Body | Sport utility (MPV) |
| Drive | AWD |
| Engine | 3.6L V6, gasoline, 295 hp |
| Engine sales codes | ERB, ERC, ERT |
| GVWR | Class 2E: 6,001 to 7,000 lb |
| Plant | Jefferson North Assembly, Detroit, Michigan |
| Air bags | Front: 1st row. Side: all rows |
| Check digit | 7, correct |
Read it against the chart: R is the 6,001 to 7,000 lb band, D is Dodge, J is AWD, G is the 3.6L V6, G in position 10 is 2016 and C is Jefferson North.
Older Dodge VINs: Dodge-only codes, same layout
Plenty of Dodges on the road start with a code only Dodge used, such as 1D8 or 2D4. vPIC lists dozens of them across FCA US, FCA Canada and the Toluca, Mexico operation. The layout stays the same: three characters for the maker, five for the vehicle, the check digit, year, plant and serial. Two real examples from GSA Auctions:
- 2D4RN4DEXAR114278: 2010 Grand Caravan SE, front-wheel drive, 3.3L V6, built at Windsor Assembly in Ontario (listing).
- 1D8HB48257F555528: 2007 Durango SLT, 4WD, 5.7L V8 that vPIC notes as HEMI Multiple Displacement, built at Newark Assembly in Delaware (listing).
Dodge trucks work the same way. A 1999 Ram 2500 decodes as make DODGE, model Ram, so it belongs on this page; newer pickups carry R for Ram in position 5 and decode on the Ram VIN decoder. Dodges from before the 1981 model year use VINs vPIC can't read; the classic car VIN guide explains those.
Dodge models in NHTSA's data
vPIC lists two Dodge models for 2026, the Charger and the Durango, and the Hornet through 2025. Its all-years list has 51 names, including the Aries, Omni, Diplomat, Daytona, Spirit, Stealth, Viper, Neon, Intrepid, Stratus, Magnum, Caliber, Nitro, Avenger, Challenger, Journey and Dart, the Dakota and Ram trucks, and Sprinter vans sold under the Dodge name.
For a Chrysler or Jeep VIN, use that brand's page: the Chrysler VIN decoder or the Jeep VIN decoder.
Where is the VIN on a Dodge?
- On the dash at the base of the windshield, driver's side, readable from outside. That spot is required on cars, SUVs and light trucks (49 CFR 565.13).
- On the certification label in the driver's door opening (49 CFR 567.4).
- On the title, registration and insurance card.
After the decode: listing a Dodge for sale
Use the decoded trim and engine in the listing. Buyers search for R/T, Scat Pack and Hellcat by name, and the VIN backs up what you say.
Dodge stickers are online from Stellantis, so the results include a link to the original Dodge window sticker with options and packages.
