Can-Am VIN lookup: start with the first three characters
Can-Am is a brand of Bombardier Recreational Products, and its VINs begin with a BRP code. vPIC lists these for Can-Am:
| WMI | Company in vPIC | Type in vPIC | Plant codes vPIC knows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2BX | Bombardier Recreational Products, Canada | Motorcycle (make Can-Am or Spyder) | V Valcourt, Quebec |
| 2BV | Bombardier Recreational Products | Motorcycle | |
| 2BW | Bombardier Recreational Products | Off-road vehicle | |
| 3JB | BRP Mexico | Motorcycle | E, J, K Juarez; F Queretaro |
| 3JC | BRP Queretaro | Motorcycle | F Queretaro |
| 2BZ | Bombardier Recreational Products, Canada | Trailer |
vPIC files the Spyder under two make names on 2BX, Can-Am and Spyder, so some Spyder VINs come back with the make Spyder. It's the same machine.
How to read a Can-Am VIN: BRP's Spyder and Canyon chart
BRP filed this chart with NHTSA for its 2025 three-wheelers, with a cover letter dated December 6, 2024:
| Position | What BRP encodes | 2025 codes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | WMI | 2 (Canada) |
| 2 | WMI | B |
| 3 | WMI | X: 2BX, Bombardier Recreational Products, motorcycle |
| 4 | Make | N, R or B, all listed as Can-Am |
| 5 | Line or model | B Spyder RT, D or E Spyder F3, K Canyon, L Canyon XT, M Canyon Redrock |
| 6 | Type of motorcycle | C tricycle with 6-speed manual, D tricycle with 6-speed semi-automatic |
| 7 | Engine and net brake power | D 1330 ACE inline 3 at 115 hp (86 kW), E the same engine at 105 hp (78 kW) |
| 8 | Emissions certification | 2 EPA 50 states, 4 EPA 49 states, 1 others |
| 9 | Check digit | 0 to 9 or X |
| 10 | Model year | S = 2025 |
| 11 | Plant | V = Valcourt, Quebec, Canada |
| 12 | Sequential number | Positions 12 to 17, assigned by BRP |
| 13 | Sequential number | |
| 14 | Sequential number | |
| 15 | Sequential number | |
| 16 | Sequential number | |
| 17 | Sequential number |
BRP's chart covers the Spyder RT, Spyder F3 and Canyon only. Outlander, Renegade, Maverick, Defender and Commander VINs use other codes, and the decoder reads them from whatever BRP gave vPIC.
Example: what a 2025 Spyder RT VIN says
Put the chart together and a 2025 Spyder RT with the semi-automatic gearbox, the 115 hp engine and 50-state EPA certification reads like this, leaving out the parts that vary by machine:
- 2BX: BRP, motorcycle, Canada.
- N, R or B: Can-Am.
- B: Spyder RT.
- D: tricycle with the 6-speed semi-automatic.
- D: 1330 ACE, 115 hp.
- 2: EPA 50 states.
- Check digit, then S for 2025 and V for Valcourt.
- Six-digit sequential number.
That's a reading of the chart, not a real VIN.
A real Can-Am VIN decoded: 2023 Ryker
A dealer in Ontario listed this 2023 Ryker 900 for sale with its VIN on the listing. NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for 3JB2FEG41PJ002266:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2023 Can-Am Ryker |
| Type | Three-wheeled motorcycle with two wheels in front (vPIC: reverse trike) |
| Engine | 900 cc (900 ACE engine) |
| Plant | Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico |
| GVWR | Class 1A: 3,000 lb or less |
| vPIC warnings | The model year may be wrong, so decode again with the year from the title |
Year codes repeat every 30 years, and the position 7 rule that keeps the two cycles apart covers only cars, SUVs and light trucks up to 10,000 lb GVWR, so vPIC flags the year on motorcycles and off-road vehicles.
Outlander, Maverick and Defender: off-road VINs
Can-Am's ATVs and side-by-sides are built as off-road vehicles, and vPIC lists the 2BW code as an off-road vehicle WMI. When vPIC knows a machine is off-road, its decode carries a warning saying the manufacturer didn't certify it to the federal motor vehicle safety standards. Read that as a category label. The decode above it still gives the model, year and engine vPIC has.
Year letters are another trap on these machines. The rule in 49 CFR 565.15 that uses position 7 to separate, say, 1995 from 2025 applies to cars, MPVs and light trucks, not to motorcycles or off-road vehicles. If the decoded year looks 30 years off, the title is the tiebreaker.
Can-Am models in vPIC
vPIC lists 13 Can-Am models for 2026: the Spyder, Ryker and Canyon three-wheelers, the Origin and Pulse motorcycles, the Outlander and Renegade ATVs, and the Commander, Defender, Defender/Traxter, Maverick R, Maverick Trail/Maverick Sport and Maverick X3 side-by-sides. Its all-years list of 19 adds the DS, Electric Commander, Maverick, Ryker Rally Edition, Spyder F3 and Spyder RT.
Where is the VIN on a Can-Am?
- Spyder, Canyon and Ryker: a saddle and no more than three wheels make them motorcycles under federal definitions (49 CFR 571.3), so the certification label with the VIN goes on a permanent part as close as practicable to where the steering post meets the handlebars (49 CFR 567.4).
- Outlander, Renegade, Maverick, Defender and Commander: on the frame. Your owner's manual shows the exact place.
- Paperwork: the title or registration, if your state issues one for the machine.
There's more on these machines on the ATV VIN decoder and motorcycle VIN decoder pages. If you're selling, CarShots turns phone photos into clean listing shots on a backdrop in about 20 seconds each.
