Do you need a bill of sale in Georgia?
Fill in the free Georgia bill of sale on this page and print it.
Georgia DOR's selling steps tell sellers to complete Bill of Sale Form T-7 and keep a copy. A bill of sale is required to register a vehicle that does not need a title, such as a model year 1985 or older car. Form T-7 must be completed in full and signed by the seller and buyer. It has no notary section, and any correction or alteration voids it.
Use the official form if you prefer it: Bill of Sale (T-7).
What a Georgia bill of sale must include
Georgia lists these items:
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Year, make and model
- Odometer reading without tenths, or 'exempt'
- Date of sale
- Purchase price
- Seller's full legal name and address
- Purchaser's full legal name and address
- Lienholder information, if any
- Signatures of the seller and buyer
How to sell a car in Georgia
- Make sure the title is in your name and any lien is released on it.
- On the back of the title, in blue or black ink, enter the buyer's full legal name, address and the date of sale.
- Enter the odometer reading in whole miles, and check a box if it exceeds mechanical limits or is not the actual mileage.
- Print and sign your name under Seller. Each joint owner must print and sign.
- Never hand over a title signed with the buyer's name left blank. Georgia law makes this a misdemeanor.
- Complete Bill of Sale Form T-7 with the buyer, and keep copies of the title and bill of sale.
- Keep your license plate.
- Cancel your registration online in DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J at your County Tag Office, before you cancel your insurance.
Where to sign a Georgia title
The assignment section on the back of the Georgia title, under Seller. Each joint owner prints and signs. The title signature does not need a notary in Georgia.
Registration cancellation in Georgia
Required: registration cancellation. File Application of Voluntary Registration Cancellation (MV-18J). You can file it online.
What happens to your license plates when you sell a car in Georgia?
Georgia DOR says plates do not transfer with the vehicle to the new owner, so the seller keeps them. The seller must also cancel the registration, online or with Form MV-18J, and should do it before cancelling insurance to avoid penalties.
Inspection, odometer and sales tax in Georgia
Inspection. Georgia's emissions program covers 13 metro Atlanta counties: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale. A Georgia consumer protection page says sellers of gas cars and light trucks (8,500 lbs GVWR or less) located in those counties must sell them with a current, passing emissions inspection if they will be registered there. We found no other inspection tied to the sale.
Odometer disclosure. The seller enters the odometer reading on the title in whole miles and checks a box if it exceeds mechanical limits or is not the actual mileage. The buyer prints and signs to acknowledge it. Georgia DOR lists vehicles 20 model years old or older, vehicles over 16,000 lbs GVWR and vehicles that are not self-propelled as exempt.
Sales tax. Georgia charges a one-time title ad valorem tax (TAVT) instead of sales tax. The buyer pays 7.0% of the fair market value from the state's motor vehicle assessment manual, in the buyer's county when applying for title. A trade-in does not reduce TAVT in a private sale. TAVT paid after 30 days adds a 10% penalty plus 1% per month.
What the buyer does next
The buyer has 7 days to apply for a new title. The title fee is $18.
