Common questions

Are these tools really free?

Yes. They're free to use, and none needs a signup. The plate blur tool limits how many photos you can blur free each day.

Where does the VIN data come from?

From NHTSA's free vPIC decoder, plus NHTSA recall and safety rating data and EPA fuel economy data. Original window stickers open on the manufacturer's own site; CarShots doesn't store or sell them.

Do you keep what I type into these tools?

No. The bill of sale is filled in and printed in your browser, and nothing you type into it is stored or emailed; the only thing it sends is the VIN, to decode it. The plate blur tool sends only a small copy of each photo to find the plate, blurs the photo in your browser and keeps nothing.
