How to read an Isuzu VIN
Isuzu's 2026 filing with NHTSA covers its medium and heavy-duty trucks and incomplete vehicles, the N-Series and F-Series cab-overs. Each position, with the codes Isuzu lists:
| Position | Meaning | 2026 codes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier | JAL = Isuzu Motors Ltd, Japan; 54D = The Shyft Group, USA (both incomplete vehicles) |
| 4 | GVWR and brake system | B = class 3 (10,001 to 14,000 lb), C = class 4 (14,001 to 16,000), E = class 5 (16,001 to 19,500), all hydraulic; K = class 6 (23,501 to 26,000), M = class 7 (26,001 to 33,000), both air |
| 5 | Make and series | 4 = N-Series NPR, NPR-HD, NPR-XD; 5 = NQR, NRR; 6 = F-Series FTR, FVR; D, E, F = Chevrolet low cab forward |
| 6 | Cab type | W = tilt cab (66 or 71 in. bumper to back of cab), S = tilt cab (81 in.), J = non-tilt crew cab (105 or 110 in.) |
| 7 | Chassis | 1 = 4x2, 2 axles |
| 8 | Engine | 6 = 4HK1-TC 5.2L diesel (Isuzu), D = L8T 6.6L V8 gas (GM), F = B67 6.7L diesel (Cummins), V = ZF CeTrax Lite 150 kW electric |
| 9 | Check digit | 0 to 9 or X |
| 10 | Model year | T = 2026 (L = 2020 through X = 2029) |
| 11 | Plant | 7 = Fujisawa, Japan; S = Charlotte, Michigan (The Shyft Group, Builtmore) |
| 12 | Model combination | One code for model, engine and GVWR (see below) |
| 13 to 17 | Sequential number | Five digits |

Example: an Isuzu NPR-HD VIN decoded
54DC4W1B4KS808939 is a 2019 NPR-HD with a gasoline engine, built by The Shyft Group in Charlotte, Michigan. It appears in Isuzu's recall 20V-193 as the last VIN listed for the NPR-HD. Character by character:
- 54D: The Shyft Group, incomplete vehicle.
- C: class 4, 14,001 to 16,000 lb GVWR, hydraulic brakes.
- 4: Isuzu N-Series.
- W: standard tilt cab.
- 1: 4x2 with two axles.
- B: the engine. Isuzu's 2026 table no longer lists B; vPIC decodes this 2019 code as GM's 6.0-liter gasoline V8 (L96).
- 4: check digit.
- K: 2019.
- S: Charlotte, Michigan.
- 8: model combination code for that year.
- 08939: sequence number.
vPIC adds that it is an incomplete chassis cab with a 71-inch bumper to back of cab, and it flags every incomplete vehicle: a body builder may have changed it since it left the plant.
How the VIN tells an NPR from an NPR-HD or a Chevrolet 4500
Recall 20V-193 covered 157 gas trucks built on a night shift from July 8 to 12, 2019, when a brake line clip may have been installed wrong. It lists three VIN ranges, and the first five characters are enough to tell them apart:
| VIN starts with | Position 4 | Position 5 | Truck in the recall |
|---|---|---|---|
| 54DB4 | B: class 3 | 4: Isuzu N-Series | 2019 Isuzu NPR Gas |
| 54DC4 | C: class 4 | 4: Isuzu N-Series | 2019 Isuzu NPR-HD Gas |
| 54DCD | C: class 4 | D: Chevrolet low cab forward | 2019 Chevrolet 4500 |

What does position 12 mean on an Isuzu truck VIN?
Most makers start the serial number at position 12. Isuzu uses it for a model combination code that sums up model, engine and GVWR, which makes it a quick check on a spec sheet. Isuzu's 2026 codes:
- Built in Fujisawa (plant 7), all with the 4HK1-TC diesel: 0 = NPR-HD or Chevrolet 4500HD, 14,500 lb; K = NPR-XD or 4500XD, 16,000 lb; P = NRR or 5500XD, 17,950 or 19,500 lb.
- Built in Charlotte, Michigan (plant S): 2 = NPR Gas or 3500HG at 12,000 lb, and NPR HD Gas or 4500HG at 14,500 lb, with the L8T gas engine; 5 = NQR Gas or 5500HG, 17,950 lb; R = NRR Gas or 5500XG, 19,500 lb; A = FTR or 6500XD with the Cummins B67, 25,950 lb; B = FVR or 7500XD, 25,950 or 33,000 lb; E = NRR-EV, 17,950 or 19,500 lb.
The diesel N-Series comes from Japan and the gas, F-Series and electric trucks from Michigan, so position 11 and position 8 usually agree.
Decoding an older Isuzu SUV
Isuzu's light vehicles use a different layout. NHTSA crash tested a 1999 Rodeo with VIN 4S2CM58WXX4322644 (test 3055), and vPIC decodes it as a 1999 Rodeo/Amigo, 4WD, with the 3.2-liter DOHC V6 (6VD1), built by Subaru-Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana.
This VIN shows the rarer check digit X. The weighted sum of its characters is 362, and 362 divided by 11 leaves 10, which the check digit writes as X. A Rodeo VIN that ends in a digit in position 9 isn't wrong; it only means the remainder was 0 to 9.
Isuzu WMIs and Isuzu-built vehicles with other badges
vPIC ties these codes to Isuzu as the maker or the make:
| WMI | Maker in vPIC | Make | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| JAA, JAB, JAC | Isuzu Motors Limited, Japan | Isuzu | Truck, passenger car, MPV |
| JAL, JAM | Isuzu Motors Limited, Japan | JAL: Chevrolet, Hino, Isuzu; JAM: Isuzu | Incomplete vehicle |
| 4S1, 4S2 | Isuzu Motors Limited, Japan | Isuzu | Truck, MPV (U.S. country code) |
| 54D | The Shyft Group | Chevrolet, GMC, Isuzu | Incomplete vehicle |
| 722 | Isuzu North America Corporation | Chevrolet, Isuzu | Incomplete vehicle |
| 1GG, 4GT, J8C, J8T | General Motors | Isuzu | Truck |
| 4NU | General Motors | Isuzu | MPV |
| 4KL | General Motors | Isuzu | Incomplete vehicle |
| JAE | Isuzu Motors Limited, Japan | Acura | MPV |
| 4S6 | Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America | Honda | MPV |
| J81 | Isuzu Motors Limited, Japan | Chevrolet, Geo | Passenger car |
So an Isuzu-built SUV can carry a Honda or Acura badge, and some Isuzu trucks were built by GM. The decoder reports the make on the VIN, not the company that built it.
Where to find the VIN on an Isuzu truck
On an N-Series or F-Series truck, don't expect a VIN plate under the windshield: that rule covers vehicles of 10,000 lb GVWR or less (49 CFR 565.13(f)), and these trucks are rated higher. Use the certification label on the driver's door edge or door pillar (49 CFR 567.4). Because they leave the plant as incomplete vehicles, a body builder adds its own final-stage label with the VIN, its name and the completion date (49 CFR 567.5).
A Rodeo, Trooper, Amigo or other light Isuzu has the usual dash plate on the driver's side, readable through the windshield, plus the door label.
