How to read a Mack VIN
Mack spells out even the first three characters one at a time in its NHTSA filings: country, then manufacturer, then whether the truck is complete. Here is the current layout, from Mack's filings of October 2022 and April 2026, applied to a 2025 Granite:
| Position | What Mack codes | On 1M2GR3GY9SM046631 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Country: 1 = United States, 3 = Mexico | 1: United States |
| 2 | Manufacturer: M = Mack Trucks, X = Volvo Group Operations Mexico | M: Mack Trucks |
| 3 | Type: 1 = complete, 2 = incomplete | 2: incomplete vehicle |
| 4 and 5 | Model: AN Anthem, GR Granite, LR, PN Pinnacle, TE TerraPro, MD; the 2026 filing adds A2 Anthem, PR Pioneer, KE Keystone and G2 Granite | GR: Granite |
| 6 | Engine size, fuel and horsepower band | 3: Mack 13-liter diesel, 335 to 434 hp |
| 7 | Axle layout and market | G: 6x4, U.S. and Canada |
| 8 | Chassis type, GVWR class and brakes | Y: truck-tractor, class 8, air brakes |
| 9 | Check digit | 9 |
| 10 | Model year: K = 2019 through Y = 2030, then 1 = 2031 | S: 2025 |
| 11 | Plant | M: Macungie, Pennsylvania |
| 12 to 17 | Sequential serial number | 046631 |
vPIC decodes this VIN as a 2025 Mack Granite truck-tractor, 6x4, with a 13-liter Mack MP8 rated 335 to 434 hp, class 8 air brakes, destination market domestic, built in Macungie.
Why do older Mack VINs look different?
Older Macks, including the 2018 Granite below, use positions 4 to 7 as one combined model and engine code. Mack's December 2016 filing lists codes like AN for the Pinnacle axle-forward (CHU), AW for the Pinnacle axle-back (CXU), AX for the Granite GU, AV for the MRU, LR for the LR and BD for the Titan TD with the 16.1-liter MP10. Two real Granites from the same recall show the switch:
| Position | 2018 Granite: 1M2AX04C0JM040847 | 2025 Granite: 1M2GR3GY9SM046631 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | 1M2: U.S., Mack, incomplete | 1M2: U.S., Mack, incomplete |
| 4 to 7 | AX04 as one code: Granite GU713, 10.8-liter MP7, 335 to 434 hp | GR Granite, 3 for the 13-liter engine at 335 to 434 hp, G for 6x4 in the U.S. and Canada |
| 8 | C: truck, class 8, air brakes | Y: truck-tractor, class 8, air brakes |
| 9 | 0 | 9 |
| 10 | J: 2018 | S: 2025 |
| 11 | M: Macungie | M: Macungie |
| 12 to 17 | 040847 | 046631 |
Both VINs bracket recall 24V-773: 49 Granite trucks built from November 1, 2017 to June 24, 2024 that may have left with tires not tested to the federal standard for truck tires (FMVSS 119), because Mack's sales tool didn't block them on U.S. orders.
Which engine is in my Mack? Position 6
On newer Macks, position 6 combines the engine, its fuel and a horsepower band. Mack's April 2026 filing, for 2027 and later models:
- Mack diesels: 1 and 2 are the 11-liter MP7 at 235 to 334 and 335 to 434 hp, and E is the MP7 at 435 to 534 hp; 3 and 4 are the 13-liter M13D at 335 to 434 and 435 to 534 hp; S is the 13-liter MD13 at 535 to 634 hp.
- Cummins diesels: 5 and 6 ISL 8.9-liter, A and B ISB 6.7-liter, H, J and K X10 10-liter, P and R ISB7.2.
- Gas engines: 7 and 8 Cummins ISL-G, 9 Cummins ISX G 11.9-liter, F and G Cummins B6.7 gasoline, L, M and N Cummins X10G.
- Electric: C and D, the Mack E-1.
The same digit can name different engines in different years. Mack's October 2022 filing, for 2023 to 2026 models, lists 3 and 4 as the 13-liter MP8 and 5 to 8 as the Cummins L9 and L9N, which is why vPIC calls the 2025 Granite's engine an MP8.
What does position 7 mean on a Mack VIN?
Position 7 pairs the axle layout with the market the truck was built for. For the common layouts Mack uses two letters, one for the U.S. and Canada and one for Latin America and export: A and B for 4x2, C and D for 4x4, E and F for 6x2, G and H for 6x4, J and K for 6x6, L and M for 8x2, N and P for 8x4.
Bigger layouts get one code for all markets: R 8x6, S 10x2, T 10x4, V 10x6, X 12x4, Z 12x6, 1 14x4, 3 14x6 and 5 8x8. Mack filed its April 2026 letter for a single change: R moved from the domestic market to all markets.
Mack plants and WMIs
Position 11 is the plant. The 2026 filing lists M for Macungie, Pennsylvania, S for Salem, Virginia, N for New River Valley in Dublin, Virginia, and P for Monterrey, Mexico. Mexican-built trucks also change positions 1 and 2, to 3 for Mexico and X for Volvo Group Operations Mexico. The 2016 filing and the 1994 to 2007 update list only Macungie.
vPIC links these WMIs to the Mack make: 1M1 (truck), 1M2 and 1M3 (incomplete) for Mack Trucks Inc.; 2M1, 2M2 and 2M3 for Mack Canada Inc.; and 1S9136 and 1S9410 for Mack Trucks of Utah, two six-character codes for a small manufacturer. A vPIC search for "mack" also returns trailer makers such as Mackey Trailers and Macklin Welding, which have nothing to do with Mack trucks.
Where to find the VIN on a Mack
A Mack carries its VIN on the certification label at the driver's door, along with the build date and weight ratings (49 CFR 567.4). When the VIN starts with 1M2, the truck left Mack incomplete, and the company that completed it adds a final-stage label with the same VIN (49 CFR 567.5). Trucks this heavy aren't covered by the windshield VIN rule for vehicles of 10,000 lb or less (49 CFR 565.13(f)), so don't expect a dash plate. Compare the label with the title.
Mack models in NHTSA's database
vPIC lists 55 Mack models under make ID 490. Current names include Anthem, Granite, Pinnacle, Pioneer, Keystone, LR, MD and TerraPro; older ones include the CH, CL, CX (Vision), CXU (Pinnacle), CT, CTP and CV (Granite), GU (Granite), LE, LEU and MRU (TerraPro), MV (Freedom), RD, RB, RW and TD (Titan), plus the DM, MR, R and U families.
For other heavy trucks, compare the Volvo VIN decoder, since Mack belongs to the Volvo Group, and the Kenworth and Peterbilt guides.
