What a Kawasaki VIN lookup tells you
Type in the VIN and the decoder checks it (17 characters, no I, O or Q, a valid check digit), then pulls Kawasaki's record from NHTSA's vPIC database: model year, model, engine displacement, cylinders, fuel, vehicle type and the plant. For road bikes, NHTSA recall campaigns for that model and year appear under the result.
Dirt bikes, ATVs and side-by-sides such as the KX, Brute Force, Teryx and Mule are built for off-road use, so their results can carry vPIC's off-road vehicle warning. That warning is about federal safety certification, not about the VIN being wrong; the ATV VIN decoder page explains it in more detail.
The first eight characters name the model
Kawasaki's filing with NHTSA calls positions 1 to 8 the model identifier and lists one for every 2026 road model. In all 68 rows, positions 4 and 5 repeat the first two letters of Kawasaki's model code, position 7 repeats the code's version letter, and position 8 is 1. Every 2026 model code ends in T, the 2026 year letter.
Some 2026 examples from that chart:
| Model | Kawasaki model code | VIN positions 1 to 8 | Engine | Net power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ninja ZX-6R | ZX636JT | JKBZXJJ1 | 636 cc, 4 cyl | 91 kW |
| Ninja ZX-10R | ZX1003AT | JKBZXXA1 | 998 cc, 4 cyl | 135 kW |
| Ninja H2 | ZX1002JT | JKBZXVJ1 | 998 cc, 4 cyl | 170 kW |
| Ninja 650 | EX650PT | ML5EXEP1 | 649 cc, 2 cyl | 50 kW |
| Ninja 500 | EX500GT | ML5EXGG1 | 451 cc, 2 cyl | 38 kW |
| Ninja 7 Hybrid | CX500AT | ML5CXGA1 | 451 cc, 2 cyl | 43 kW |
| Z900 | ZR900ST | ML5ZRDS1 | 948 cc, 4 cyl | 92 kW |
| Z900RS | ZR902AT | JKBZRWA1 | 948 cc, 4 cyl | 86 kW |
| KLR650 | KL650FT | ML5KLEF1 | 652 cc, 1 cyl | 30 kW |
| Vulcan S | EN650DT | JKAENED1 | 649 cc, 2 cyl | 45 kW |
| Vulcan 1700 Voyager | VN1700BT | JKBVNRB1 | 1700 cc, 2 cyl | 61 kW |
| Eliminator | EL450AT | ML5ELFA1 | 451 cc, 2 cyl | 38 kW |
| KLX230 | LX232AT | MH4LXEA1 | 233 cc, 1 cyl | 13 kW |
| Ninja 300 | EX300GT | MAAEX8G1 | 296 cc, 2 cyl | 29 kW |
| Ninja e-1 | NX011AT | ML5NXHA1 | Electric | 9 kW |
Non-ABS versions get their own identifier: JKBZXXB1 for the non-ABS Ninja ZX-10R, against JKBZXXA1 for the standard one.
How to read a Kawasaki VIN, position by position
The right column is the example layout in Kawasaki's 2026 filing, which leaves the check digit blank.
| Position | What Kawasaki puts there | Filing example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manufacturer code: JKA, JKB, ML5, MH4 or MAA | J |
| 2 | Manufacturer code | K |
| 3 | Manufacturer code | A |
| 4 | Model identifier: first letter of the model code (Z for ZX or ZR, E for EX or EN, K for KL, V for VN) | Z |
| 5 | Model identifier: second family letter | R |
| 6 | Model identifier: a letter set within the family | C |
| 7 | Model identifier: the version letter | K |
| 8 | Model identifier: 1 on 2026 road models | 1 |
| 9 | Check digit, calculated under 49 CFR 565 | blank |
| 10 | Model year: T = 2026 | T |
| 11 | Plant: A Japan, D Thailand, J Indonesia, R India | A |
| 12 | Serial: starts at 000001 (Japan), A00001 (Thailand), P00001 (Indonesia) or T00001 (India) | 0 |
| 13 | Serial | 0 |
| 14 | Serial | 0 |
| 15 | Serial | 0 |
| 16 | Serial | 0 |
| 17 | Serial | 1 |
Put together, a 2026 Ninja 650 from the Thailand plant reads ML5EXEP1?TDA##### (? for the check digit, # for the serial). That's a pattern, not a real bike.
Kawasaki plant codes in vPIC
For the JKA and JKB codes, vPIC's plant table lists these, including two Taiwan plants run by other companies:
| Code | Plant | Location |
|---|---|---|
| A | Akashi | Hyogo, Japan |
| 2 | Toyokawa | Aichi, Japan |
| D | Pluak Daeng | Rayong, Thailand |
| J | Cikarang Barat | Bekasi, Indonesia |
| T | Salinas Victoria | Nuevo Leon, Mexico |
| C | Not named | Philippines |
| 1 | Tai Ling Motors | Taiwan |
| B | Kwang Yang Motor Co. (KYMCO) | Kaohsiung, Taiwan |
Kawasaki's 2026 filing also uses R for India, on MAA VINs such as the Ninja 300 and W175.
A real Kawasaki VIN decoded: 2024 Ninja 7 Hybrid
Kawasaki listed this 2024 Ninja 7 Hybrid's VIN as the first in one of the VIN ranges in its recall report to NHTSA (recall 24V-680, for an ECU that may shift the transmission to neutral). NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for ML5CXGA16RDA00161:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 7 (series: CX500AR) |
| Type | Sport motorcycle |
| Engine | Hybrid: 451 cc two-cylinder engine plus a 48-volt electric motor, 68.5 hp, 6-speed automated manual |
| Plant | Pluak Daeng, Rayong, Thailand |
| GVWR | Class 1A: 3,000 lb or less |
| vPIC warnings | The model year may be wrong, so decode again with the year from the title |
Year codes repeat every 30 years, and the position 7 rule that keeps the two cycles apart covers only cars, SUVs and light trucks up to 10,000 lb GVWR, so vPIC flags the year on motorcycles and off-road vehicles.
Example: a listing VIN that doesn't decode as a Kawasaki
Here's a real case that shows the decoder's limits. A government auction on GSA Auctions listed a 2020 Kawasaki Mule with the VIN RGSW643A3LB360866. vPIC reads it this way:
- Make: KYMCO (Kwang Yang Motor Co.), because RGS is a KYMCO code, not one of Kawasaki's
- Model year: 1990, with a note that it may be incorrect
- Plant: Kaohsiung, Taiwan
- Positions 4 to 8: unused, because the maker's submission to NHTSA doesn't explain them, so no model comes back
Two things are going on. L in position 10 can mean 1990 or 2020, and the position 7 rule that settles the decade on cars and light trucks doesn't apply to motorcycles or off-road machines, so vPIC picked the earlier year. And the decoder can only name the maker that owns the first three characters. When a result disagrees with the listing, go by the frame stamp and the title, not the listing text.
Kawasaki models in vPIC
vPIC has 64 Kawasaki models for 2026, from the Ninja 500, ZX-4R, ZX-6R, ZX-10R and H2 to the Z500, Z900 and Z900RS, Vulcan S, 900 and 1700, Versys 650 and 1100, KLR650, KLX230 and KLX300, KX motocross bikes, the Brute Force and KFX ATVs, and the Mule and Teryx side-by-sides. The all-years list holds 223 names, back to the KZ, GPZ, Ninja 600R, Concours and Bayou.
Where is the VIN on a Kawasaki?
- Street bikes: on the steering head, the frame tube right behind the handlebars. Federal rules put the certification label, which carries the VIN, as close as practicable to where the steering post meets the handlebars (49 CFR 567.4).
- ATVs, Mules and Teryx: stamped on the frame; the owner's manual shows the spot for your model.
- Paperwork: the title, registration or certificate of origin.
