How to read a Suzuki motorcycle VIN
Suzuki's VIN guide gives each motorcycle model its first ten characters, so positions 4 to 8 work as one model identifier. This chart reads JS1EJ11B5V7100001, which we built from the 2027 Hayabusa entry in Suzuki's July 2026 guide with a computed check digit and the first serial in Suzuki's range. It shows the layout; we didn't match it to a particular bike.
| Position | Suzuki meaning | JS1EJ11B5V7100001 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | WMI, 1st character | J |
| 2 | WMI, 2nd character | S |
| 3 | WMI, 3rd character: JS1 is Suzuki's code for motorcycles built in Japan | 1 |
| 4 | Model identifier, 1st character | E |
| 5 | Model identifier, 2nd character | J |
| 6 | Model identifier, 3rd character | 1 |
| 7 | Model identifier, 4th character | 1 |
| 8 | Model identifier, 5th character: B for the 49-state Hayabusa, D for the 50-state one | B |
| 9 | Check digit, calculated per 49 CFR 565 | 5 |
| 10 | Model year: V = 2027 | V |

vPIC decodes it as a 2027 Hayabusa (Suzuki model numbers GSX1300RRM7 and GSX1300RRZM7), 1,340 cc four-cylinder, 185.1 hp, built at the Hamamatsu plant in Shizuoka, Japan.
Suzuki motorcycle model codes for 2027
These are the first ten characters in Suzuki's 2027 guide. The * stands for the check digit, and V is the 2027 model year:
| Model | First ten characters | Engine | Net hp |
|---|---|---|---|
| SV-7GX | JS1ET11B*V | 645 cc twin | 72.4 |
| GSX-R600 | JS1GN7FA*V | 599 cc four | 119.4 |
| GSX-R750 | JS1GR7MA*V | 750 cc four | 147.0 |
| GSX-R1000, R and RS 40th Anniversary (49-state, 50-state) | JS1DM11Y*V, JS1DM11Z*V | 1,000 cc four | 169.0 |
| Hayabusa (49-state, 50-state) | JS1EJ11B*V, JS1EJ11D*V | 1,340 cc four | 185.1 |
| DR650S | JS1SP46D*V | 644 cc single | 42.0 |
| Burgman 400 | JS1DU11J*V | 400 cc single | 28.8 |
Codes change between years. The 2026 SV650 ABS was JS1VP55B, while the 2027 SV-7GX, on the same 645 cc twin, is JS1ET11B; the 2024 DR-Z400S was JS1SK43A, and the 2026 DR-Z4S is JS1ER11E (49-state) or JS1ER11F (50-state).
A real Suzuki VIN decoded: 2022 Hayabusa
Suzuki listed this 2022 Hayabusa's VIN as the first in one of the VIN ranges in its recall report to NHTSA (recall 24V-769, for a brake master cylinder port that can be blocked). NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for JS1EJ11B5N7100001:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa (series: GSX1300RRM/GSX1300RRZM) |
| Type | Sport motorcycle |
| Engine | 1,340 cc four-cylinder, 185.1 hp |
| Plant | Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan |
| GVWR | Class 1A: 3,000 lb or less |
| vPIC warnings | The model year may be wrong, so decode again with the year from the title |
Year codes repeat every 30 years, and the position 7 rule that keeps the two cycles apart covers only cars, SUVs and light trucks up to 10,000 lb GVWR, so vPIC flags the year on motorcycles and off-road vehicles.
Was my Suzuki built for California?
For some bikes the VIN answers it. Suzuki gives 49-state and 50-state versions their own model identifier: the 2027 Hayabusa is JS1EJ11B (49-state) or JS1EJ11D (50-state), and the GSX-R1000 40th Anniversary models are JS1DM11Y or JS1DM11Z. We ran both Hayabusa versions through NHTSA's vPIC: the B version came back with the destination market "49 States (Except California)" and the D version with "50 States". Models with one version, such as the 2027 DR650S (JS1SP46D), have no split, so their VIN won't say.
Can I decode a Suzuki ATV or car VIN?
Yes, with limits. Suzuki's guide is titled for motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles: 5SA is its code for ATVs built by Suzuki Manufacturing of America Corporation in Rome, Georgia, and RFD covers motorcycles and ATVs from Tai Ling Motor in Taiwan. vPIC's 2025 and 2026 Suzuki lists include the KingQuad 400 Asi, 400 Fsi, 500 Axi and 750 Axi and the QuadSport Z50 and Z90, but the 2027 guide on file details on-road motorcycles only, so we can't chart ATV positions here. The ATV VIN decoder page covers quads from every brand.
Suzuki cars decode too. vPIC's Suzuki codes include JS2, JS3, JG7, 2S2, 2S3 and KL5 for cars and SUVs and JS4 and 5Z6 for trucks, with model names such as the Samurai, Sidekick, Grand Vitara, XL7, SX4, Kizashi and Equator.
Where is the VIN on a Suzuki motorcycle?
Start at the steering head. Federal rules require a street motorcycle's certification label on a permanent part as close as practical to where the steering post meets the handlebars, and the label shows the VIN with the month and year of manufacture (49 CFR 567.4). The VIN itself must be marked on a part that isn't meant to come off except for repair, or on a plate fixed to one (49 CFR 565.13).
On a Suzuki car or SUV, look through the windshield on the driver's side and at the label in the driver's door opening. ATVs are off-road vehicles outside those motor vehicle rules, so check the owner's manual for the spot on a KingQuad or QuadSport.
What a Suzuki VIN decode won't tell you
Color, and sometimes the edition. The 2027 Hayabusa Special Edition and the GSX-R600Z 40th Anniversary Edition share their first ten characters with the standard bikes, so the VIN can't separate them; for the Hayabusa, vPIC lists both model numbers. The year needs a second look too: the year letters repeat every 30 years, and the federal rule that tells 1997 from 2027 (a letter in position 7) applies only to cars, SUVs and light trucks, so vPIC adds a note that a motorcycle's decoded year may be wrong. Match it against your title. A Suzuki from before the 1981 model year has no 17-character VIN to decode; the classic car VIN page covers older serial numbers. For other brands' bikes, see the motorcycle VIN decoder.
