Polaris VIN lookup: why the result says off-road vehicle
Most Polaris machines aren't motor vehicles in the federal sense, and NHTSA's data says so. Decode a Sportsman, Ranger or RZR VIN and vPIC usually returns its details along with an off-road vehicle warning: the manufacturer didn't certify the product to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that apply to motor vehicles. That's normal for an ATV or side-by-side. It doesn't mean the VIN is fake or that the decode failed.
The decoder still checks all 17 characters and the check digit, then shows what vPIC has: model, series, engine size, fuel, drive, GVWR class and the plant. The recall list under each result comes from NHTSA, which covers motor vehicles; for an ATV or side-by-side, also search the Consumer Product Safety Commission's recalls.
Example: a 2012 Polaris Sportsman VIN decoded
4XATN55A2CA365847 belongs to a 2012 Polaris ATV that the National Park Service listed on GSA Auctions. vPIC returns:
| Field | vPIC value |
|---|---|
| Make and model | Polaris Sportsman |
| Series | XP |
| Model year | 2012, with a note that the year may be incorrect |
| Body class | Off-road vehicle, all-terrain vehicle (motorcycle-style) |
| Engine | 1 cylinder, 549 cc, gasoline |
| Drive | 4WD |
| Transmission | Shaft drive, off-road |
| GVWR | Class 1A, 3,000 lb or less |
| Plant | Roseau, Minnesota (A in position 11) |
| Check digit | 2, correct |
| Warning | Off-road vehicle, not certified to motor vehicle safety standards |
Why the year note? Position 10 is C, which stands for 1982 or 2012. On cars, MPVs and light trucks, a letter or number in position 7 settles the decade under 49 CFR 565.15, but that rule doesn't cover ATVs, so vPIC flags the year. The listing and the machine itself point to 2012.
Polaris WMI codes, and the brands that share them
The first three characters say who built the vehicle and, for Polaris, often which brand it carries. vPIC lists these for Polaris Industries:
| WMI | Type in vPIC | Make vPIC returns |
|---|---|---|
| 4XA | Motorcycle (includes ATVs such as the Sportsman above) | Polaris |
| 3NE, 3NS | Motorcycle, built in Mexico | Polaris |
| SN1, S21 | Off-road vehicle, United States | Polaris |
| TAP | Motorcycle, built in Poland | Polaris |
| 5VP | Motorcycle | Polaris, Victory or Indian Motorcycle |
| 57X | Motorcycle | Slingshot |
| 52C | Low-speed vehicle | Polaris |
| 5AS | Low-speed vehicle | GEM |
A Slingshot, GEM, Indian or Victory VIN decodes fine here, but the result names the make vPIC returns, not Polaris. For road-going motorcycles in general, see the motorcycle VIN decoder.
Polaris plant codes (position 11)
For 4XA and 3NS VINs, vPIC maps position 11 like this:
- A or B: Roseau, Minnesota (P is a pilot line there)
- 8: Huntsville. vPIC's table says Minnesota, but Polaris's own Slingshot filing puts its Huntsville plant in Alabama.
- E, F, G, H, M or N: Mexico (X is a pilot line there)
- J, K or L: Poland
- R: Roush, Michigan
- S: Shanghai, China; T: Taiwan
SN1 VINs use their own codes: 2 for Spirit Lake, Iowa and C for Roseau.
How to read a Polaris VIN: the 2026 Slingshot chart
The VIN chart Polaris filed with NHTSA for 2026 covers the Slingshot, its three-wheeled road vehicle. It shows how Polaris uses each position:
| Position | What Polaris encodes | 2026 Slingshot codes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | WMI, first character | 5 |
| 2 | WMI | 7 |
| 3 | WMI, completing 57X | X |
| 4 | Make position | A = three-wheeled motorcycle, two wheels in front and one in back |
| 5 | Type | A = rear-wheel drive, open cab |
| 6 | Line | T S, P SL, F SLR, R R, G R Grand Touring, L Signature Edition |
| 7 | Engine | G 1997 cc manual, H 1997 cc AutoDrive |
| 8 | Net brake horsepower | B 204 hp, D 180 hp |
| 9 | Check digit | 0 to 9 or X |
| 10 | Model year | T = 2026 |
| 11 | Assembly plant | 8 = Huntsville, Alabama (E on a few 2026 Slingshots means the same) |
| 12 | Serial number | Six characters, positions 12 to 17 |
| 13 | Serial number | |
| 14 | Serial number | |
| 15 | Serial number | |
| 16 | Serial number | |
| 17 | Serial number |
Positions 4 to 8 read AATGD on a Slingshot S with the manual and AARHB on a Slingshot R with AutoDrive. The S and SL carry D (180 hp); the SLR, R, R Grand Touring and Signature Edition carry B (204 hp).
Polaris models in vPIC
vPIC lists 51 Polaris models for 2026: seven Rangers (1000, Crew 1000, Crew 570-4, XP 1000, Crew XP 1000, XD 1500 and Crew XD 1500), 21 RZR versions, four Generals, the Xpedition and Xpedition ADV 5, nine Sportsman ATVs, the Scrambler, the Pro XD and the GEM, plus snowmobiles such as the Matryx. Its all-years list of 153 names reaches back to the Trail Boss, Trail Blazer, Xplorer 400 and the Indy and RMK snowmobiles.
Where is the VIN on a Polaris?
- ATVs and side-by-sides (Sportsman, Scrambler, Ranger, RZR, General, Xpedition): stamped on the frame. The spot varies by model, so check the owner's manual.
- Slingshot: Polaris's filing calls it a three-wheeled motorcycle, and the rule that puts a car's VIN behind the windshield doesn't cover motorcycles. Use the owner's manual to find it.
- GEM: low-speed vehicles fall under the same rule as cars, so the VIN must be readable through the windshield next to the left pillar (49 CFR 565.13).
- Paperwork: the title or registration, where your state issues one.
