How to read a Toyota VIN
Toyota doesn't give positions 4 to 8 separate meanings. Its filings with NHTSA list them as one "vehicle specification" code, and each code stands for a body, engine, hybrid system, series, drive and restraint package together. This chart reads a real 2026 Camry with Toyota's Camry table.
| Position | Toyota meaning | Camry: 4T1DAACKXTU358622 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Region of the plant: 4, 5 or 7 for the USA, 2 Canada, 3 Mexico, J Japan | 4 |
| 2 | T for Toyota | T |
| 3 | Type for that factory's code: 4T1 is a car from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky | 1 |
| 4 | Vehicle code, 1st of 5 characters | D |
| 5 | Vehicle code, 2nd of 5 | A |
| 6 | Vehicle code, 3rd of 5 | A |
| 7 | Vehicle code, 4th of 5 | C |
| 8 | Vehicle code, 5th of 5 | K |
| 9 | Check digit; an X means the formula left a remainder of 10 | X |
| 10 | Model year | T = 2026 |
| 11 | Plant | U = Georgetown, Kentucky |
| 12 | Production number, digit 1 | 3 |
| 13 | Production number, digit 2 | 5 |
| 14 | Production number, digit 3 | 8 |
| 15 | Production number, digit 4 | 6 |
| 16 | Production number, digit 5 | 2 |
| 17 | Production number, digit 6 | 2 |
DAACK is a 4-door sedan with the A25A-FXS 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid system (184 hp engine plus the 1VM motor), 80 Series, two-wheel drive, restraint category 1. DBADK is the 85 Series with four-wheel drive and a second motor.
Example: a Toyota Camry hybrid VIN decoded
NHTSA's vPIC database returns these fields for 4T1DAACKXTU358622:
| Field | What comes back |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2026 Toyota Camry, 80 Series |
| Body | 4-door sedan, 5 seats |
| Powertrain | 2.5L four-cylinder A25A-FXS with the 1VM motor, strong hybrid, e-CVT |
| Engine rating | 184 hp (the engine alone) |
| Hybrid battery | Lithium-ion, 252 V |
| Drive | Two-wheel drive |
| Plant | Georgetown, Kentucky |
| GVWR | Class 1C: 4,001 to 5,000 lb |
| Listed as standard | Pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control |
The decode names the series (80 Series), not the LE, SE or XSE badge. Toyota's Camry table doesn't carry those grades.
Tacoma VIN decoder: the 2026 codes
Every 2026 Tacoma in Toyota's filing uses the 2.4L T24A-FTS four-cylinder. The five-character code separates the cab, output, series, drive and weight class. Tacomas start with 3TM when built in Baja California (plant letter M) and 3TY when built in Guanajuato (plant letter T).
| Positions 4 to 8 | Cab | Output | Series and drive | GVWR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JBAFN | Large Cab | 278 hp | 40 Series, 2WD | Class D |
| JBAJN | Large Cab | 278 hp | 45 Series, 4WD | Class D |
| JDAHN | Large Cab | 228 hp | 41 Series, 2WD | Class D |
| KB5FN | Double Cab | 278 hp | 40 Series, 2WD | Class D |
| KE5JN | Double Cab | 270 hp | 45 Series, 4WD | Class D |
| LB5JN | Double Cab | 278 hp | 45 Series, 4WD | Class E |
| LD5KN | Double Cab | 228 hp | 46 Series, 4WD | Class E |
| LC5LN | Double Cab hybrid (1TM motor) | 275 or 278 hp | 47 Series, 4WD | Class E |
"Large Cab" is the name Toyota's filing uses. Class D is 5,001 to 6,000 lb and Class E is 6,001 to 7,000 lb.
Tundra VINs carry the trim
The 2026 Tundra table goes further than the Camry or Tacoma: the first character of the code is the grade. All 2026 Tundras use the 3.4L V35A-FTS V6, rated 389 hp, or 358 hp on the SR.
- Position 4, the grade: K SR, L SR5, J Limited, M 1794, N Platinum, P TRD PRO, V Capstone. W covers Limited Appearance, Heritage and several grades listed with TRD ORP.
- Position 5: C marks the hybrid, which adds the 1TM motor.
- Position 8, cab and bed: A Double Cab with a 6.5 ft bed, B CrewMax 5.5 ft, C CrewMax 6.5 ft, D Double Cab 8.1 ft.
- Position 11: X, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas.
Older trucks decode too. A 2019 Tundra, 5TFDW5F16KX780853, comes back as an SR5 4WD crew cab with the 5.7L 3UR-FBE V8, built in San Antonio.
Toyota plant codes in position 11
Each Toyota filing names its own plants. These letters come from Toyota's 2026 and 2027 tables:
| Code | Plant | Model in that filing |
|---|---|---|
| U | Georgetown, Kentucky | Camry |
| P | Blue Springs, Mississippi | Corolla |
| V | Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, Madison, Alabama | Corolla Cross |
| X | Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas | Tundra |
| M | Baja California, Mexico | Tacoma |
| T | Guanajuato, Mexico | Tacoma |
| 3 | Tsutsumi Plant, Toyota, Aichi, Japan | Crown |
| W | Graz, Austria | GR Supra (filed by BMW AG) |
The Corolla Cross comes from Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, and its WMI 7MU is registered under that name. See the Mazda VIN decoder for Mazda's own codes.
What JT, 4T1, 5TF and WZ1 tell you
vPIC lists 34 World Manufacturer Identifiers for Toyota's companies. Each one points to a factory group:
- JT: Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan, such as JTD on the Crown.
- 4T1 and 4T3: Kentucky. 5TD and 5TB: Indiana. 5TF and 7SV: Texas. 5YF: Mississippi.
- 2T1, 2T2 and 2T3: Canada. 3TM and 3TY: Mexico.
- JTH and JTJ: registered to Toyota Motor Corporation but decoded as Lexus. Use the Lexus VIN decoder page for those.
- WZ1: registered to BMW AG, decoded as Toyota. It is the GR Supra, which BMW files with NHTSA; the BMW VIN decoder explains BMW's side of that layout.
Where to find a Toyota VIN
Look through the windshield at the driver's side corner of the dash, where federal rules place the VIN on cars, SUVs and pickups up to 10,000 lb GVWR (49 CFR 565.13). The certification label on the driver's door edge or pillar repeats it, along with the month and year of manufacture. The title and registration carry it too, and all three should match.
