Jeep Wrangler VIN decoder: all 17 positions
FCA US LLC, part of Stellantis, files a VIN code guide for each model year. For Jeeps, positions 5, 6 and 7 work as a set: brand, model and price series, which also fixes the body, drive position and drive wheels. Here is a real 2023 Wrangler, read with the guide's Wrangler page.
| Position | What Jeep codes there | 1C4HJXEG7PW670506 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Country: 1 USA, 3 Mexico | 1 |
| 2 | Part of the WMI 1C4, FCA US LLC | C |
| 3 | Vehicle type: 4 MPV (SUV), 6 truck | 4 |
| 4 | GVWR range and restraints | H: vPIC reads Class 1D, 5,001 to 6,000 lb |
| 5 | Brand: J is Jeep | J |
| 6 | Model: X is the Wrangler | X |
| 7 | Price series, body and drive position | E: Sahara, 4-door, left-hand drive |
| 8 | Engine | G: 3.6L V6, 285 hp |
| 9 | Check digit | 7 |
| 10 | Model year | P = 2023 |

| 12 | Plant sequence number, digit 1 | 6 |
| 13 | Plant sequence number, digit 2 | 7 |

| 15 | Plant sequence number, digit 4 | 5 |
| 16 | Plant sequence number, digit 5 | 0 |

Position 4 letters change by year. The 2027 guide uses P for a Wrangler rated 5,001 to 6,000 lb and R for 6,001 to 7,000 lb, each with active belts and side airbags in all rows.
What the decoder shows for that Wrangler
These are the fields NHTSA's vPIC database returns for 1C4HJXEG7PW670506. A second 2023 Wrangler, 1C4HJXDG7PW678154, differs only in position 7 and the serial: D instead of E, and it decodes as a Sport.
| Field | Result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sahara |
| Body | SUV, 4 doors, open body |
| Drive | 4WD |
| Engine | 3.6L V6, 285 hp, gasoline |
| Plant | Toledo North Assembly, Toledo, Ohio |
| GVWR | Class 1D: 5,001 to 6,000 lb |
| Blind spot monitoring | Optional |
| Forward collision warning | Optional |
When vPIC marks a feature "Optional", the VIN can't say whether this Jeep has it. Only the window sticker or the vehicle itself can.
Wrangler trim codes: Sport, Sahara, Rubicon, 392
In the 2027 guide, positions 5 to 7 name the Wrangler's series and doors, and position 8 the engine:
| Positions 5 to 7 | 2027 Wrangler |
|---|---|
| JXA | Sport, 2-door |
| JXC | Rubicon, 2-door |
| JXD | Sport, 4-door |
| JXE | Sahara, 4-door |
| JXF | Rubicon, 4-door |
| JXS | 392, 4-door |
| JXK, JXL, JXM | Sport, Sahara and Rubicon, 4-door, right-hand drive (Sahara and Rubicon export only) |
Engine letters: G is the 3.6L V6 (285 hp), J the 6.4L V8 (470 hp) and N the 2.0L turbo four-cylinder (270 hp).
Is my Wrangler a JK or a JL?
The decode settles it. NHTSA's vPIC database keeps "Wrangler JK" as its own model name, and a real 2018 VIN, 1C4BJWDG2JL883180, comes back as a Wrangler JK Unlimited Sport with the 3.6L V6 and a 6-speed manual, built at Toledo Supplier Park. Its positions 5 and 6 read JW, where the 2023 VINs above read JX. The plant letter differs too: L on that 2018 JK, W on the newer Wranglers from Toledo North Assembly.
VIN codes for the 2027 Jeep lineup
Each Jeep line has its own model letter and plant. From Stellantis' 2027 guide:
| Model | Starts with | Positions 5 and 6 | Plant (position 11) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrangler | 1C4 | JX | W: Toledo North Assembly, Ohio |
| Gladiator | 1C6 | JT | L: Toledo Supplier Park, Ohio |
| Grand Cherokee | 1C4 | JG (2WD), JH (4WD) | C: Jefferson North, Detroit; 8: Mack, Detroit |
| Grand Cherokee L | 1C4 | JJ (2WD), JK (4WD) | C or 8, Detroit |
| Grand Wagoneer | 1C4 | JU (2WD), JV (4WD) | S: Warren Truck Assembly, Michigan |
| Cherokee | 3C4 | JM | T: Toluca, Mexico |
| Compass | 3C4 | JD | T: Toluca, Mexico |
The 2027 Cherokee code lists a 1.6L turbo hybrid four-cylinder rated 170 hp; the Compass a 2.0L turbo rated 200 hp.
Jeep WMIs and the models NHTSA knows
1C4 isn't Jeep-only. vPIC registers it to FCA US LLC for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and other brands, so the J in position 5 is what marks a Jeep. Older Jeeps used Jeep-only codes such as 1J4 and 1J8 for SUVs and 1J7 for trucks. vPIC holds 24 Jeep model names, from the CJ-5, CJ-7 and Comanche to the Recon and Wagoneer S. For the sister brands, see the Chrysler, Dodge and Ram pages.
Finding the VIN on a Jeep
Doors off or on, the windshield plate stays put: the VIN is at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, readable from outside (49 CFR 565.13). The certification label by the driver's door opening repeats it, with the month the Jeep was built and its weight ratings. The title and registration should show the same 17 characters.
