What the Ram VIN decoder shows
Type or paste the VIN and the Ram VIN decoder checks it, then reads NHTSA's vPIC database. For a Ram that means the model year, the model (1500, 2500, 3500, a chassis cab or a ProMaster), trim, cab type, drive, engine, GVWR class and the assembly plant, plus the safety equipment Stellantis reported for it, such as where the air bags are.
You also get NHTSA's recall campaigns for that model and year. A campaign on the list doesn't prove this truck still needs the repair. For the open or closed status of one VIN, check NHTSA's recall search.
Some things no Ram VIN holds: paint color, option packages, or who owned the truck. Paint is on its own label, covered in where to find your paint code.
Ram is one of the makes with factory window stickers online, so the result also links to the original Ram window sticker for that VIN.
How to read a Ram VIN, position by position

Year letters are from the federal table in 49 CFR 565.15. Codes in positions 4 to 8 can change from one model year to the next, so the decoder reads them against that year's data.
Example: a 2021 Ram 2500 VIN, decoded
3C6TR5CJXMG501121 belongs to a 2021 Ram 2500 offered on GSA Auctions, the federal government's public surplus site. This is what vPIC returns for it:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Model year | 2021 |
| Make and model | RAM 2500 |
| Trim | Tradesman |
| Body and cab | Pickup, Crew Cab |
| Drive | 4WD |
| Engine | 6.4L V8, gasoline, 410 hp |
| GVWR | Class 2G: 8,001 to 9,000 lb |
| Plant | Saltillo Truck Assembly, Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico |
| Air bags | Front: 1st row. Side: all rows |
vPIC's manufacturer field for this VIN reads Chrysler de Mexico Toluca, the older name it keeps for FCA Mexico. The position codes match the 2027 guide: T for the 8,001 to 9,000 lb band, 5 for a 4WD 2500, C for a Crew Cab Tradesman, J for the 6.4L and G for Saltillo.
How the check digit on this Ram VIN works
Position 9 is a math check, so one mistyped character gets caught before anything is decoded. Each letter stands for a number (A and J are 1, C is 3, R is 9), each position gets a weight (8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, then 0 for the check digit itself, then 9 down to 2), and the products are added up.
For 3C6TR5CJXMG501121 the products add up to 307. Divide by 11 and the remainder is 10, which is written as X. Position 9 is X, so the VIN is valid. Change any one character and the math stops working, which is why the decoder asks you to recheck the VIN instead of returning the wrong truck.
Why an older Ram decodes as a Dodge
Ram pickups and vans used to be sold as Dodge models, and their VINs say so. The VIN of a 1999 Ram 2500, 3B7KC26Z1XM542894, decodes as make DODGE, model Ram, series 2500, with a 5.9L V8 and 2WD, built at Lago Alberto Assembly in Mexico City. Its WMI, 3B7, is a Dodge truck code in vPIC, and a 1985 Ram Van B250 starts with 2B7 the same way.
Newer trucks carry the shared Stellantis codes 1C6, 3C6 and 3C7 with R in position 5. If you paste an older Dodge-badged Ram here, the decoder still decodes it, flags that the make is Dodge, and offers the Dodge VIN decoder. Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge share the same layout; the Mopar VIN decoder covers all four brands on one page.
Ram models and where the 2027 trucks are built
vPIC lists eight Ram models for 2026: the 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500, and the ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500. Its all-years list adds the 4000, Cargo Van and Promaster City. The 2027 guide splits production like this:
| 2027 model | WMI | Plant code and plant |
|---|---|---|
| Ram 1500 | 1C6 or 3C6 | N Sterling Heights Assembly, Michigan; 4 Saltillo Truck Extension, Mexico |
| Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups | 3C6 | G Saltillo Truck Assembly, Mexico |
| Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs | 3C7 | G Saltillo Truck Assembly, Mexico |
| Ram ProMaster and ProMaster EV | 3C6 or 3C7 | E Saltillo Van/Truck Assembly, Mexico |
Where is the VIN on a Ram?
- Base of the windshield, driver's side. Federal rules put the VIN where you can read it through the glass on trucks up to 10,000 lb GVWR (49 CFR 565.13).
- Driver's door jamb. The certification label on the hinge pillar, latch post or door edge repeats the VIN with the GVWR (49 CFR 567.4).
- Paperwork. The title, registration and insurance card all carry it.
- Heavy chassis cabs. Over 10,000 lb GVWR the windshield rule doesn't apply, so start with the door jamb label.
Listing a Ram once you know what it is
Truck shoppers filter by cab, bed, drive and engine, so copy the decoded values into your listing title and description. Then shoot it on your phone: CarShots puts each photo on a clean backdrop in about 20 seconds, and the guide to photos that sell a car covers which angles to take.
