How to read a Rivian VIN
Rivian's 2027 decoding tables, filed with NHTSA in February and May 2026, cover the R1S, R1T, R2 and both electric vans. Positions 4 to 8 carry the model, weight class, motors and battery, airbags and seat belts, and trim:
| Position | What Rivian codes | 2027 codes |

Do Rivian VIN codes change between model years?
Yes, so read position 10 before anything else. For 2027, Rivian rewrote the R1 codes in positions 6 and 8: the battery is now given in kWh instead of Standard, Large or Max Pack, and the trim letters were reassigned. The same A in position 8 means Adventure on a 2026 R1 and Premium on a 2027.
| Code | 2026 R1S and R1T (T) | 2027 R1S and R1T (V) |
|---|---|---|
| Position 6: A | Quad-motor, Max Pack | Dual-motor, 108 kWh |
| Position 6: B | Tri-motor, Max Pack | Tri-motor, 140 kWh |
| Position 6: C | Dual-motor, Max Pack | Dual-motor, 140 kWh |
| Position 6: D | Not used | Quad-motor, 140 kWh |
| Position 6: F | Dual-motor, Large Pack | Not used |
| Position 6: G | Dual-motor, Standard Pack | Not used |
| Position 8: A | Adventure | Premium |
| Position 8: B | Not used | Performance |
| Position 8: C | R1 Fleet (added January 2026) | Not used |
| Position 8: D | Not used | Quad |
| Position 8: E | Not used | Special |
| Position 8: F | Not used | R1 Fleet |
| Position 8: L | Launch | Not used |
| Position 8: P | Premium | Not used |
| Position 8: S | Special | Not used |
Every R1 motor setup in both years is all-wheel drive. Sources: Rivian's 2026 table (revision 3.0, January 2026) and 2027 table (May 2026).
Example: how a 2027 Rivian R2 VIN reads
Rivian's filings give the pattern rather than a full VIN, so here is a 2027 R2 Performance built from them. The question marks are the check digit and the serial, which differ on every vehicle: 7PD2EAAB?VN??????
- 7PD: Rivian, multipurpose passenger vehicle.
- 2: R2, 4-door.
- E: gross vehicle weight rating of 6,001 to 7,000 lb.
- A: dual-motor, all-wheel drive, 88 kWh battery.
- A: front, front side and curtain airbags, two front belts and three second-row belts.
- B: Performance trim. A Premium would have A here.
- V: model year 2027.
- N: built in Normal, Illinois.
The R2's first table, in February 2026, called its battery a Large Pack. Rivian changed that line to 88 kWh in May. Enter your own VIN in the decoder at the top of the page to see what NHTSA has on file for it.
A real Rivian VIN decoded: 2022 R1T
A dealer in Houston listed this 2022 R1T for sale with its VIN on the listing. NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for 7FCTGAAL3NN010176:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition |
| Body and drive | Pickup, 4 doors, all-wheel drive |
| Powertrain | Electric (battery electric), quad motor, 128.9 kWh battery |
| Plant | Normal, Illinois |
| GVWR | Class 2G: 8,001 to 9,000 lb |
| Airbags | Front, knee (row 1), side (row 1) and curtain (row 1) |
| Listed as standard | Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, lane centering, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and rear automatic braking |
| vPIC warnings | The model year may be wrong, so decode again with the year from the title |
vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list.
How to tell an R1S, R1T and R2 apart by VIN
The first four characters settle it: 7PDS is an R1S, 7FCT an R1T and 7PD2 an R2. The R1T starts with 7FC because Rivian certifies it as a truck, while the R1S and R2 are multipurpose passenger vehicles.
Position 7 holds more than you'd think. The R1T's code A lists front, knee, front side and curtain airbags. The R2's code A lists no knee airbags. On a 2027 R1S, B means three second-row seat belts and C means two, and both have two third-row belts. A 2026 R1S has only code B.
Rivian van VINs: EDV and Commercial Van
Both vans start with 7FC. Position 4 is E for the EDV and D for the Rivian Commercial Van, and position 5 is F for 7,001 to 8,000 lb or H for 9,001 to 10,000 lb. Position 8 gives the version:
- 1: 500 LHD Fleet.
- 2: 700 LHD Fleet.
- 3: 500 LHD Fleet Export.
- 4: 700 LHD Fleet Export for 2027. On a 2026 van, 4 meant 500 RHD Fleet Export, a right-hand-drive van.
- 5: 500 LHD Commercial.
- 6: 700 LHD Commercial.
The van restraint code covers the driver only, plus a three-point belt for a folding jump seat. It is B for 2026 and D for 2027. For 2026, position 6 was E for single-motor FWD with a Standard Pack or F for dual-motor AWD with a Large Pack.
Where is the VIN on a Rivian?
Look through the windshield from outside, next to the driver's side pillar. Every Rivian in these filings is rated at 10,000 lb or less, so federal rules require the VIN to be readable there without moving any part of the vehicle (49 CFR 565.13(f)). The certification label on the driver's door-latch post, hinge pillar or door edge shows it too (49 CFR 567.4), and so do the title and registration. Make sure they all match.
Rivian models in NHTSA's database
vPIC lists five Rivian models under make ID 10887: R1T, R1S, RCV, EDV and R2. Its records show Rivian's truck code 7FC created in March 2021 and its MPV code 7PD in August 2021, both for Rivian Automotive LLC in the United States.
To compare how other makes lay out their codes, see the Tesla VIN decoder, the Ford VIN decoder and the GMC VIN decoder. Selling a Rivian yourself? Read how to take pictures of a car to sell.
