What a Tesla VIN lookup returns
Enter the VIN and the decoder checks it, then reads Tesla's record in NHTSA's vPIC database: model year, model, trim, body class, drive type, fuel type (electric), GVWR, doors, plant and the air bags. NHTSA recall campaigns for that model and year come with it. To see whether one specific car still needs a remedy, use NHTSA's VIN recall search or ask Tesla service.
Tesla's VIN sheets are short, and the 2026 and 2027 versions use the same codes for the models they share, so a Tesla VIN is easy to read by hand.
How to read a Tesla VIN
Codes from Tesla's sheets for the 2026 model year (filed July 2026) and 2027 model year (filed August 2026). Cybertruck and Semi use positions 5 and 6 differently; they're covered further down.
| Position | What Tesla encodes | Codes (Model 3, Y, S, X, Cybercab) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | World manufacturer identifier | 5 or 7, United States |
| 2 | World manufacturer identifier | Y in 5YJ, S in 7SA, G in 7G2 |
| 3 | World manufacturer identifier | 5YJ passenger car (Model S, Model 3, Cybercab), 7SA multipurpose vehicle (Model X, Model Y), 7G2 truck (Cybertruck, Semi) |
| 4 | Make, line and series | 3 Model 3, Y Model Y, S Model S, X Model X, A Cybercab |
| 5 | Body type and GVWR | E sedan, 4 doors; G class D MPV, 5 doors; A hatchback, 5 doors; C class E MPV, 5 doors; J hatchback, 2 doors |
| 6 | Restraint system | 1 belts for the front row and three second-row seats (Model 3 and S); D the same on Model Y and X; A adds two third-row seats; B front row, two second-row and two third-row seats; E Cybercab. All with front, side and knee air bags |
| 7 | Fuel type | E = electric |
| 8 | Motor and drive unit | See the table below |
| 9 | Check digit | 0 to 9 or X, under 49 CFR 565.15(c) |
| 10 | Model year | T = 2026, V = 2027 |
| 11 | Plant of manufacture | F Fremont, California; A Austin, Texas |
| 12 | Unique serial number | 000000 to 999999 |
| 13 | Unique serial number | |
| 14 | Unique serial number | |
| 15 | Unique serial number | |
| 16 | Unique serial number | |
| 17 | Unique serial number | Signature Series Model S and Model X: S00000 to S00250 (2026 sheet) |
The 2027 sheet covers the Model 3, Model Y and Cybercab, plus the Cybertruck and Semi. The Model S and Model X codes (S, X, A, C, 5 and 6) appear on the 2026 sheet.
Single motor, dual motor or Performance: the 8th character
| Code | Tesla's description | Models |
|---|---|---|
| A | Single motor | Model 3 |
| B | Dual motor, non-performance | Model 3 |
| D | Single motor | Model Y |
| E | Dual motor, non-performance | Model Y |
| T | Dual motor, Performance | Model 3 and Model Y |
| 5 | P2 dual motor | Model S and Model X (2026 sheet) |
| 6 | P2 tri motor | Model S and Model X (2026 sheet) |
| U | Single motor | Cybercab |
| C, D, E | Single, dual and triple motor | Cybertruck |
| B | Dual drive rear axle, air brakes | Semi |
Letters repeat across lines, so read position 8 together with position 4: B is a dual-motor Model 3 but a Semi drive unit, and E is a dual-motor Model Y but a triple-motor Cybertruck.
Example: a 2027 Model Y, character by character
From Tesla's 2027 sheet, a five-seat, dual-motor Model Y built in Austin reads 7SAYGDEE?VA and then a six-digit serial, with ? for the check digit:
- 7SA: Tesla, multipurpose vehicle.
- Y: Model Y.
- G: class D MPV, five doors.
- D: belts for the front row and three second-row seats, with front, side and knee air bags.
- E: electric.
- E: dual motor, non-performance. A T here would mean Performance.
- V: 2027. A: Austin, Texas.
That's a reading of the sheet, not a real VIN.
A real Tesla VIN decoded: 2026 Model Y
This 2026 Model Y went through an NHTSA crash test (test 15534), and the test record lists its VIN. NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for 7SAYGDEE3TF444198:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2026 Tesla Model Y (dual motor, not the Performance) |
| Body | SUV, 5 doors, 2 rows, 5 seats |
| Powertrain | Electric (battery electric), dual motor, 60 kWh battery |
| Plant | Fremont, California |
| GVWR | Class 1D: 5,001 to 6,000 lb |
| Airbags | Front, knee (row 1) and side (row 1) |
| Listed as standard | Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and adaptive cruise control |
vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list.
Cybertruck and Semi VINs
Tesla's trucks use 7G2 and swap the jobs of positions 5 and 6:
- Position 4: C Cybertruck, T Semi.
- Position 5, chassis and cab: B day cab (Semi); E truck with belts for the front row and three second-row seats plus front, side and knee air bags (Cybertruck).
- Position 6, GVWR: G 8,001 to 9,000 lb and H 9,001 to 10,000 lb on the Cybertruck; E Class 8, 33,001 lb and over, on the Semi.
- Position 11: A Austin, Texas, or N Reno, Nevada.
Because the GVWR class is in the VIN, a Cybertruck's VIN tells you whether it's rated at 8,001 to 9,000 lb or 9,001 to 10,000 lb.
Older Teslas and other codes
vPIC added 7SA in November 2021 and 7G2 in October 2022, so a Model X or Model Y built before 7SA existed may start with 5YJ instead. vPIC also lists SFZ as a Tesla passenger car code; it isn't on the 2026 or 2027 sheets. The decoder handles any of them, since it reads whatever Tesla gave vPIC for that VIN.
Tesla models in vPIC
vPIC lists seven Tesla models for 2026: the Model 3, Model S, Model X, Model Y, Cybertruck, Semi and Cybercab. Its all-years list adds the Roadster, for eight in total.
Where is the VIN on a Tesla?
Look through the windshield at the driver's side of the dash. Federal rules require it there, readable from outside, on cars, SUVs and trucks up to 10,000 lb GVWR, which covers every Cybertruck (49 CFR 565.13). The Semi is above that limit, so check its door label. Every model carries the VIN on the certification label in the driver's door opening (49 CFR 567.4), and it's on the title and registration.
