Is there a BMW window sticker lookup by VIN?
Not one BMW makes public, as far as we can find. For the original label, ask a BMW dealer to print it from the VIN, look in the car's purchase paperwork, or contact BMW's customer service.
The BMW window sticker lookup on this page builds what public data allows, free: the vPIC decode of year, model, trim, body, engine, drive and plant, plus EPA fuel economy or range, NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings and the recalls NHTSA lists for that model and year. Packages, options and their prices are only on the original. The window sticker guide explains each part of the label.
How to read BMW model names on a window sticker
BMW's names tell you the drivetrain before you read the fine print:
- xDrive models are all-wheel drive and sDrive models rear-wheel drive in EPA's data, as with the X5 xDrive40i and X5 sDrive40i. EPA rates both at 25 mpg for 2026.
- i at the front (i4, i5, i7, iX) means electric, so the label shows range and MPGe.
- e at the end (550e, 750e, X5 xDrive50e) marks a plug-in hybrid with the two-box label.
Many 2026 gas BMWs, from the 330i to the X7, are listed by EPA as mild hybrids. They don't plug in, so their stickers use the gasoline label. EPA lists most gas Mercedes-Benz models the same way.
BMW i4, i5 and iX range by wheel size
| 2026 BMW EV | EPA range by wheel size |
|---|---|
| iX xDrive60 | 364 miles on 20-inch wheels, 318 on 23-inch |
| iX xDrive45 | 312 miles on 20-inch wheels, 279 to 297 on larger ones |
| iX M70 | 303 miles on 21-inch wheels, 283 on 23-inch |
| i5 eDrive40 | 310 miles on 19-inch wheels, 278 on 21-inch |
| i4 eDrive40 | 307 miles on 19-inch wheels |
| i4 M60 | 278 miles on 19-inch wheels, 232 on 20-inch |

BMW plug-in hybrid window stickers
BMW's plug-ins get EPA's two-box label, with electric range and MPGe on one side and gas mpg on the other. EPA's 2026 ratings:
- X5 xDrive50e: 40 miles on electricity, 60 MPGe, 22 mpg on gas
- 750e xDrive: 35 miles, 24 mpg
- 550e xDrive: 34 miles, 25 mpg
- M5 sedan: 29 miles, 14 mpg (M5 Touring: 25 miles, 13 mpg)
- XM Label: 30 miles, 14 mpg
Gas ratings for the rest of the lineup include the 330i at 31 mpg combined, the 330i xDrive and M340i at 29, the X1 xDrive28i at 28 and the X7 xDrive40i at 23, all on premium fuel.
Where is the VIN on a BMW, and what do BMW codes mean?
Look through the windshield at the driver's side, or read the certification label on the driver's door jamb. Per vPIC, BMW AG uses WBA, WBY, 3MW and 3MF for cars and WBX and WB5 for SUVs; BMW M GmbH uses WBS; and BMW's US manufacturing arm uses 5UX and 5YM for SUVs. The BMW VIN decoder explains the remaining characters.
vPIC's BMW list also includes BMW motorcycle codes. The sticker law covers passenger cars and station wagons, so motorcycles fall outside it. For a BMW motorcycle, the motorcycle VIN decoder is the better fit.
BMW crash ratings on the window sticker
NHTSA's 2025 list gives the 3 Series sedan 5 stars in every category. The X1, X3 and X5 with AWD earned 4 stars overall, with 4 stars frontal, 5 side and 4 rollover. The rear-drive X5 has frontal and side ratings but no overall score, which is why the decoded drive type matters when the spec sheet looks up a rating.
Pricing a used BMW from the VIN
Packages and options separate one used X5 from another, and the original sticker is the only document that lists them with prices. Ask a BMW dealer for a reprint before you set the price. On your lot, the free window sticker maker prints a used-car sheet with the decoded model and features, your price, mileage and a QR code to the listing. Every used car also needs the FTC Buyers Guide in the window.
