How to read a Bentley VIN
Bentley's VIN structure is short and strict: one character each for body, engine and restraints, a two-letter type code for cars built for North America and the Gulf, then a fixed zero before a five-digit serial. This Bentley VIN decoder chart follows SCBCW2ZG0VC000001, the example VIN printed in Bentley's 2027 Continental GT filing, so it's a pattern rather than a car on the road.
| Position | What Bentley codes there | In SCBCW2ZG0VC000001 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | WMI, 1st character | S |
| 2 | WMI, 2nd character | C |
| 3 | WMI, 3rd character: SCB is Bentley Motors' code for cars | B |
| 4 | Body type: C is the coupe | C |
| 5 | Engine type and emissions standard: W is the 520 PS V8 plug-in hybrid certified to LEV 4/Tier 3 (50) | W |
| 6 | Restraint system: 2 is the 4-seat coupe system | 2 |
| 7 | Vehicle type code, 1st character | Z |
| 8 | Vehicle type code, 2nd character: ZG marks a car for North America and the Gulf regions only | G |
| 9 | Check digit: 0 to 9, or X | 0 |
| 10 | Model year: V is 2027 | V |
| 11 | Plant: C is Pyms Lane, Crewe, Cheshire, England | C |
| 12 | Always a leading zero | 0 |
| 13 | Serial number, 1st of five digits | 0 |
| 14 | Serial number | 0 |
| 15 | Serial number | 0 |
| 16 | Serial number | 0 |
| 17 | Serial number, last digit | 1 |
NHTSA's vPIC database decodes this VIN as a 2027 Continental, trim GT: a plug-in hybrid with a 4.0L V8 rated 513 hp, built in Crewe, error code 0.
What does the 5th digit of a Bentley VIN mean?
The engine, plus the emissions standard it's certified to. That's why two letters can stand for one engine: W and U are the same 520 PS V8 hybrid, certified to different standards. Bentley's 2027 filings use seven codes:
| Code | Engine | Hybrid system | Emissions standard | Used on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| W | 4.0L V8 (DVT), 520 PS | 190 PS motor, 680 PS combined | LEV 4/Tier 3 (50) | Continental GT and GTC, Flying Spur |
| U | 4.0L V8 (DVT), 520 PS | 190 PS motor, 680 PS combined | LEV 3/Tier 3 (70) | Continental GT and GTC, Flying Spur |
| V | 4.0L V8 (DVT), 600 PS | 190 PS motor, 782 PS combined | LEV 4/Tier 3 (50) | GT Speed, GTC Speed, Flying Spur Speed |
| R | 4.0L V8 (DVT), 600 PS | 190 PS motor, 782 PS combined | LEV 3/Tier 3 (70) | GT Speed, GTC Speed, Flying Spur Speed |
| T | 4.0L V8 (DWR), 550 PS | None | LEV 3/Tier 3 (125) | Bentayga V8, Bentayga EWB V8 |
| F | 4.0L V8 (DWN), 650 PS | None | LEV 3/Tier 3 (125) | Bentayga V8 Speed |
| 7 | 3.0L V6 (DCB), 340 PS | 136 PS motor, 462 PS combined | LEV 3/Tier 3 (125) | Bentayga Hybrid |
PS is metric horsepower. vPIC converts it, so 520 PS decodes as 513 hp, 600 PS as 592 hp, 550 PS as 542 hp and 650 PS as 641 hp. The engine note in the decode repeats the emissions standard.
Bentley body and restraint codes by model
Position 4 is the body and position 6 the restraint system, and Bentley assigns both per model line. Code 2 in position 6 means a 4-seat coupe on an SCB VIN but a Bentayga on an SJA VIN, so always read it with the first three characters.
| Model | WMI | Position 4 | Position 6 | What the filing lists |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flying Spur | SCB | B, saloon | 6, 4 or 5 seats | Advanced front airbags, front knee airbags, thorax airbags front and rear, side curtain airbags |
| Continental GT | SCB | C, coupe | 2, 4 seats | Advanced front airbags, front knee airbags, front thorax airbags, side curtain airbags |
| Continental GTC | SCB | D, convertible | 4, 4 seats | Advanced front airbags, front knee airbags, front head-thorax airbags, roll-over protection system |
| Bentayga | SJA | A, multipurpose vehicle | 2, 4 or 5 seats | Occupancy recognition, front airbags, thorax airbags front and rear, side curtain airbags; GVWR class F |
| Bentayga EWB | SJA | H, multipurpose vehicle with extended wheelbase | 2, 4 or 5 seats | Same as the Bentayga |
Every system includes 3-point belts in all seats. Positions 7 and 8 read ZG on the cars and ZV on the Bentayga, and Bentley marks both codes North America and Gulf regions only.
What does a Bentley VIN decode show?
We ran the example VINs from Bentley's 2027 filings through vPIC, the NHTSA database this decoder reads. Each one decoded clean, with error code 0:
| Field | SCBBV6ZG3VC000001 | SCBDV4ZG7VC000001 | SJAHT2ZV6VC000001 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model and trim | 2027 Flying Spur, Speed | 2027 Continental, GTC Speed | 2027 Bentayga, series EWB |
| Body | Sedan, 4 doors | Convertible, 2 doors, 4 seats | SUV, extra-long wheelbase |
| Engine | 4.0L V8 plug-in hybrid, 592 hp | 4.0L V8 plug-in hybrid, 592 hp | 4.0L V8 gasoline, 542 hp |
| GVWR | Not returned | Not returned | Class 2F: 7,001 to 8,000 lb |
| Destination market (note field) | North America and Gulf regions only | North America and Gulf regions only | North America and Gulf regions |
| Plant | Crewe, Cheshire, England | Crewe, Cheshire, England | Crewe, Cheshire, England |
vPIC names the Continental GT, GT Speed, GTC and GTC Speed as model Continental and puts the version in the trim field. For the plug-in hybrids it lists electric as the primary fuel and gasoline as the secondary one.
A real Bentley VIN decoded: 2020 Continental GT
Bentley listed this 2020 Continental GT's VIN as the first in one of the VIN ranges in its recall report to NHTSA (recall 21V-550, for a front seat control module that can malfunction). NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for SCBCG2ZG9LC074608:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2020 Bentley Continental GT |
| Body and drive | Coupe, 2 doors, all-wheel drive, 4 seats |
| Engine | 4.0L V8, 550 hp, 8-speed automatic |
| Plant | Crewe, Cheshire, United Kingdom |
| GVWR | Class 1D to 2E: 5,001 to 7,000 lb |
| Airbags | Front and curtain (row 1) |
| Listed as optional | Automatic emergency braking |
vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list. Items listed as optional may or may not be fitted to this car; the VIN can't tell.
Which WMIs and models does NHTSA list for Bentley?
Bentley Motors Limited holds two codes: SCB for passenger cars and SJA for multipurpose vehicles, which is how NHTSA classes the Bentayga. A vPIC search for manufacturers named Bentley also returns five codes registered to trailer makers, such as Bentley Trailers & Custom Coaches (1B9867); they have nothing to do with the cars. A trailer's VIN belongs on the trailer VIN decoder.
vPIC lists 12 model names under Bentley, from the Eight, Turbo, Arnage, Azure, Brooklands and Mulsanne to the Bentayga, Continental and Flying Spur, plus two entries spelled as Rolls-Royce models. Its 2025 and 2026 lists have the Continental and Flying Spur as cars and the Bentayga as a multipurpose vehicle. A Bentley built before the 1981 model year has a shorter chassis number; see the classic car VIN page.
Where is the VIN on a Bentley?
Read it through the windshield at the driver's side bottom corner, where federal rules require it to be visible from outside (49 CFR 565.13). The certification label in the driver's door opening repeats it next to the month and year the car was built (49 CFR 567.4), and it's on the title and registration. Make sure every copy matches before you buy or sell. The paint code lives on a separate label; where to find the paint code shows where.
What can't a Bentley VIN tell you?
The specification. Paint, hide, veneer and options aren't coded, so two Continental GTs with the same first 11 characters can look nothing alike. The VIN doesn't record owners, service or damage either. The decoder shows what Bentley filed with NHTSA and the recalls NHTSA lists for that model and year. If it rejects a Bentley VIN, check position 9 first: Bentley uses X as a check digit too, and I, O and Q never appear. Listing one for sale? How to take pictures of a car to sell covers the shots buyers look for.
