What a Porsche VIN lookup shows
Enter the VIN and the decoder checks it, then reads Porsche's record in NHTSA's vPIC database: model year, model, trim, body class, drive type, engine displacement and cylinders or electric drive, fuel, transmission, GVWR, doors, plant and air bags. Recall campaigns NHTSA lists for that model and year are shown with the result; for the status of one specific car, use NHTSA's VIN recall search or a Porsche Center.
Porsche builds its internal type number into the VIN. That's the code enthusiasts use for generations, like 992 for the current 911, and the sheet below shows where it sits.
How to read a Porsche VIN
Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG files this breakdown with NHTSA. The codes are from its 2027 model year sheet:
| Position | What Porsche encodes | 2027 codes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | World manufacturer identifier | W = Germany |
| 2 | World manufacturer identifier | P = Porsche |
| 3 | World manufacturer identifier | 0 passenger car (WP0), 1 multipurpose vehicle (WP1) |
| 4 | Body variant | 911: A Coupe, B Targa, C Cabriolet. Panamera and Taycan: A short wheelbase or sedan, B long wheelbase or Cross Turismo, C Sport Turismo. Macan and Cayenne: A SUV, B Coupe |
| 5 | Motor variant | Set per series by displacement and output; see the table below |
| 6 | Restraint systems | 1 belts only, 2 air bags; every 2027 model is 2 |
| 7 | Vehicle type, 1st character | A 911 and gasoline Cayenne, Y Taycan and Panamera, X Macan and Cayenne Electric |
| 8 | Vehicle type, 2nd character | 9 911, 1 Taycan and Cayenne Electric, A Panamera and Macan, Y gasoline Cayenne |
| 9 | Check digit for North America | 0 to 9 or X |
| 10 | Model year | V = 2027 |
| 11 | Location of production | S Stuttgart, L Leipzig, D Bratislava |
| 12 | 3rd character of type, or 1st digit of the production number | 2 on the 911, A on the Taycan and gasoline Cayenne; part of a six-digit production number on the others |
| 13 | Sequential production number | Positions 13 to 17 |
| 14 | Sequential production number | |
| 15 | Sequential production number | |
| 16 | Sequential production number | |
| 17 | Sequential production number |
Position 7 is a letter on every 2027 Porsche. Under 49 CFR 565.15, a letter there places the year code in position 10 in the 2010 to 2039 cycle.
The type code: positions 7, 8 and sometimes 12
| VIN characters | Porsche type | Series |
|---|---|---|
| A9 + 2 | 992 and 992.2 | 911 |
| Y1 + A | J1 and J1.2 | Taycan |
| YA | G3 and G3.2 | Panamera |
| XA | H2 | Macan (second generation) |
| AY + A | 9YA | Cayenne |
| X1 | E4 | Cayenne Electric |
Where the type takes three characters, the third is position 12 and the production number is five digits. Where it takes two, position 12 starts a six-digit production number.
Example: a 2027 911 Carrera S Coupe, character by character
Following Porsche's sheet, a 2027 911 Carrera S Coupe from Stuttgart reads WP0AH2A9?VS2 and then a five-digit production number, with ? for the check digit:
- WP0: Porsche passenger car.
- A: Coupe.
- H: the 3.0L six-cylinder rated at 473 hp.
- 2: air bags.
- A9 with 2 in position 12: type 992, the 911.
- V: 2027. S: Stuttgart.
That's a reading of the sheet, not a real VIN. One catch: the sheet gives the Carrera S Coupe and Carrera 4S Coupe the same characters, so these positions alone don't show all-wheel drive on a 911.
A real Porsche VIN decoded: 2024 911 Carrera
This 2024 911 went through an NHTSA crash test (test 15500), and the test record lists its VIN. NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for WP0AA2A98RS207375:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2024 Porsche 911, Type 992 (trim listed as Carrera, Carrera T or Carrera 4) |
| Body | Coupe, 2 doors |
| Engine | 3.0L six-cylinder, 379 hp |
| Plant | Stuttgart, Germany |
| GVWR | Class 1C: 4,001 to 5,000 lb |
| Airbags | Front, knee (row 1) and side (rows 1 and 2) |
| Listed as standard | Forward collision warning, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist |
| Listed as optional | Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and adaptive cruise control |
vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list. Items listed as optional may or may not be fitted to this car; the VIN can't tell.
2027 motor variant letters (position 5)
Porsche says the motor variant differs by engine displacement and by performance (roughly 10 percent steps), depending on engine and series. So the same letter means different things on different models: H is the 473 hp 911 Carrera S, but the 771 hp Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

|---|---|
| 911 | A Carrera and Carrera T (3.0L, 388 hp), H Carrera S and 4S (3.0L, 473 hp), B GTS (3.6L, 532 hp), D Turbo S (3.6L, 701 hp), C GT3 (4.0L, 502 hp) |

Where is the VIN on a Porsche?
Read it through the windshield at the lower corner on the driver's side, where federal rules require it on cars and SUVs (49 CFR 565.13). The certification label in the driver's door opening repeats it (49 CFR 567.4), as do the title and registration.
For the original options, the Porsche window sticker page covers how to find the sticker. Selling a Porsche yourself? CarShots places your phone photos on a clean backdrop in roughly 20 seconds each. For the rest of the Volkswagen Group, see the Audi VIN decoder.
