Jaguar VIN decoder

Paste a Jaguar's 17-character VIN to see its model year, model, trim, engine or motors, drive and plant, from the VIN tables Jaguar Land Rover files with NHTSA. The model's recalls show with the result.

On most cars and light trucks it's on the dashboard, readable through the windshield on the driver's side. It's also on the label in the driver's door opening and on the title, registration and insurance card.

How to read a Jaguar VIN

Jaguar Land Rover's VIN tables are short. Position 4 names the model, and positions 5 to 8 are a single trim code standing for the trim, GVWR, body, engine, transmission, drive and restraints together. This Jaguar VIN decoder chart follows the 2026 F-PACE table with SADCT2EXXTA000001, a test VIN we made from that table with a computed check digit; it isn't a car we traced.

F-PACE trim codes for 2026

The F-PACE is the only Jaguar in vPIC's model lists for 2025 and 2026. JLR's 2026 table, filed in February 2026, has four trim codes:

Positions 5 to 8TrimEngineOutput
T2EXP250 R-Dynamic S2.0L AJ20 P4 four-cylinder, gasoline247 hp
T2FUP400 R-Dynamic S3.0L AJ20P6 inline-six, gasoline mild hybrid395 hp
Z2FESVR 575 Edition5.0L AJ133 V8, gasoline567 hp
V2FESVR 575 Final Edition5.0L AJ133 V8, gasoline567 hp

All four are 5-door SUVs with an 8-speed automatic, all-wheel drive and a GVWR of 5,001 to 6,000 lb. The two SVRs share an engine; only the first character of the trim code separates them.

How do you decode a Jaguar Type 01 VIN?

Jaguar filed the Type 01's VIN table with NHTSA on October 8, 2026, for the 2028 model year. It starts with SAJ, the passenger car code, puts E in position 4 for the Type 01, and uses W for 2028 and A for Solihull. Every version in the filing is a 4-door sedan with three electric motors, an 850-volt high-nickel lithium-ion battery, a single-speed transmission, all-wheel drive and 1,015 hp.

Two trim codes cover three versions. 94T1 is the trim the filing lists as "1030", and V4T1 covers both the Limited Edition Design Vision and the Limited Edition Chromatic Moments, so the VIN can't tell those two apart. vPIC already decodes the pattern: our test VIN SAJE94T16WA000001, built from the filing with a computed check digit, came back as a 2028 Jaguar Type 01, trim 1030, battery electric with three motors, built in Solihull.

What does a Jaguar VIN decode show?

Both test VINs decode clean (error code 0) in NHTSA's vPIC database, which the decoder reads:

A real Jaguar VIN decoded: 2010 XF

This 2010 XF went through an NHTSA crash test (test 7306), and the test record lists its VIN. NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for SAJWA0FA1AHR56146:

FieldvPIC result

BodySedan, 4 doors
Engine4.2L V8, automatic
PlantCastle Bromwich, United Kingdom
GVWRClass 1: 6,000 lb or less
AirbagsFront and side (rows 1 and 2)

vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list.

Jaguar WMIs and models in NHTSA's database

A vPIC search for manufacturers named Jaguar returns four codes. SAJ and SAD decode as Jaguar. SAL belongs to the same company, Jaguar Land Rover Limited, but decodes as Land Rover, so a SAL VIN belongs on the Land Rover VIN decoder. The fourth, 1J9586, is the code of Jaguar Manufacturing, Inc., an unrelated trailer maker.

vPIC lists 18 Jaguar model names, from the XJ6, XJS and Vanden Plas to the XE, XF, F-TYPE, E-PACE, I-PACE and Type 01. It decodes 17-character VINs, which start with the 1981 model year; an older Jaguar's chassis number belongs on the classic car VIN page.

Where is the VIN on a Jaguar?

Look through the windshield at the driver's side bottom corner: federal rules require the VIN to be readable there from outside the car (49 CFR 565.13). It's repeated on the certification label at the driver's door opening, next to the build month and year, and on the title and registration. Paint and options aren't in the VIN; see where to find the paint code.

Common questions

Do all Jaguar VINs start with SAJ?

No. Jaguar cars, the Type 01 included, start with SAJ, but Jaguar SUVs like the F-PACE start with SAD. A VIN that starts with SAL is a Land Rover.

How can I spot an F-PACE SVR 575 Final Edition by its VIN?

In the 2026 table its trim code, positions 5 to 8, is V2FE. The SVR 575 Edition is Z2FE.

Can the VIN show which Type 01 Limited Edition I have?

No. Jaguar's 2028 filing gives Design Vision and Chromatic Moments the same trim code, V4T1. The VIN tells you it's a Limited Edition, not which one.

Where was my Jaguar built?

Check position 11. In the current tables for the F-PACE and the Type 01, A stands for Solihull in the UK.

Does a Jaguar VIN show the color or options?

No. Paint, interior and option packs aren't coded. The trim code covers the trim, engine, drive and body only.
