How to read a Lamborghini VIN
In a current Lamborghini VIN the model comes late, in positions 7 and 8, and the serial number starts with a letter. This Lamborghini VIN decoder chart walks through ZHWUC1ZCXTLA00001, a test VIN we built from Lamborghini's 2026 Temerario filing with a computed check digit. It shows the layout, not a real car.
| Position | What Lamborghini codes there | In ZHWUC1ZCXTLA00001 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manufacturer code, 1st character | Z |
| 2 | Manufacturer code, 2nd character | H |
| 3 | Manufacturer code, 3rd character: ZHW is Automobili Lamborghini's code for cars | W |
| 4 | Series and market configuration: U is the USA | U |
| 5 | Body and restraint system: C is the coupe, with knee, pelvis-thorax and head side airbags for driver and passenger | C |
| 6 | Engine type: on a Temerario, 1 is the DZS 4.0L V8 hybrid with three electric motors | 1 |
| 7 | Make and line, 1st character | Z |
| 8 | Make and line, 2nd character: ZC is the Temerario | C |
| 9 | Check digit, X in this case | X |
| 10 | Model year: T is 2026 | T |
| 11 | Plant of manufacture: L is Lamborghini | L |
| 12 | Production serial number, which the 2026 filings start with A | A |
| 13 | Production serial number | 0 |
| 14 | Production serial number | 0 |
| 15 | Production serial number | 0 |
| 16 | Production serial number | 0 |
| 17 | Production serial number, last digit | 1 |
NHTSA's vPIC database decodes this test VIN as a 2026 Temerario plug-in hybrid: 4.0L V8, 788 hp, 2-door coupe, destination market U.S., error code 0.
Lamborghini VIN codes for 2026
Lamborghini files one VIN composition per model, and position 6 means something different on each, so read it with the line code in positions 7 and 8. Ferrari, for comparison, codes its models in positions 4 and 5; see the Ferrari VIN decoder.
| Model | WMI | Position 5 | Position 6 | Positions 7 and 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temerario | ZHW | C: coupe | 1: DZS 4.0L V8, 588 kW (788 hp), plus two front and one rear YASA electric motors, 110 kW each | ZC |
| Revuelto | ZHW | C: coupe | 1: L545 6.5L V12, 607 kW (814 hp), plus two front YASA motors and one rear Mahle motor, 110 kW each | ZM |
| Urus SE | ZPB | D: multipurpose vehicle, 5 seats | 6: DWH 4.0L V8, 456 kW (611 hp), plus one front ZF motor, 141 kW; GVWR class F | ZL |
From Lamborghini's 2026 model year US VIN compositions (vPIC letter date January 27, 2026). All three use U in position 4, T for 2026 and L for the plant.
How has the Lamborghini VIN changed since 2004?
A lot. Lamborghini's 2004 composition for the Murcielago and Gallardo put the car line first, in position 4, and used positions 7 and 8 for the engine and gearbox. Today the market comes first and the line comes last.
One catch for imports: on a 2004 Murcielago built for the rest of the world, position 9 holds 0 instead of a check digit. This decoder checks position 9 before it looks anything up, so a VIN like that will usually be rejected even when you typed it right.
| Position | 2004 (Murcielago, Gallardo) | 2026 (Temerario, Revuelto, Urus) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Car line: B Murcielago, G Gallardo | Market configuration: U for the USA |
| 5 | Version by market: U US, C Canada, A Arabian countries, E rest of world | Body and restraint system |
| 6 | Body and restraint type: 1 is a coupe with passive restraints | Engine type |
| 7 | Engine: 6 is the L535 (Murcielago), 1 the 07L (Gallardo) | Line, 1st character: Z |
| 8 | Gearbox: M manual, S e-gear | Line, 2nd character: C, M or L |
| 9 | Check digit, or 0 (not used) on rest-of-world Murcielagos | Check digit |
| 10 | 4 = 2004 | T = 2026 |
| 11 | L, Lamborghini | L, Lamborghini |
Gallardos for Canada built before February 15, 2004 carry U in position 5, not C. Our 2004 test VIN, ZHWGU11S74LA01234, decodes in vPIC as a Gallardo coupe with engine code 07L, a V10, and the e-gear transmission.
What does a Lamborghini VIN decode show?
Our three 2026 test VINs, as vPIC returns them. All three decoded clean:
| Field | ZHWUC1ZCXTLA00001 | ZHWUC1ZM9TLA00001 | ZPBUD6ZL9TLA00001 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model | 2026 Temerario | 2026 Revuelto | 2026 URUS, trim SE |
| Engine | 4.0L V8 (DZS), 788 hp | 6.5L V12 (L545), 814 hp | 4.0L V8 (DWH), 611 hp |
| Electrification | Plug-in hybrid | Plug-in hybrid | Plug-in hybrid |
| Body | Coupe, 2 doors | Coupe, 2 doors | SUV, 5 seats |
| GVWR | Not returned | Not returned | Class 2F: 7,001 to 8,000 lb |
| Plant fields | City Bologna, state Sant'Agata Bolognese | City Bologna, state Sant'Agata Bolognese | City Sant'Agata Bolognese, Emilia-Romagna |
vPIC lists driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and lane keeping as Optional on all three, so the VIN alone doesn't tell you whether a given car has them. Plant code L is the same on all three; only vPIC's plant fields differ.
A real Lamborghini VIN decoded: 2023 Urus Performante
Lamborghini listed this 2023 Urus Performante's VIN as the first in one of the VIN ranges in its recall report to NHTSA (recall 24V-348, for a hood that may open while driving). NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for ZPBUC3ZL5PLA17210:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2023 Lamborghini Urus (series: Performante) |
| Body | SUV |
| Engine | 4.0L V8 (engine code DWN), 657 hp |
| Plant | Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy |
| GVWR | Class 2E: 6,001 to 7,000 lb |
| Airbags | Front, side (rows 1 and 2) and curtain (rows 1 and 2) |
| Listed as standard | Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and rear automatic braking |
vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list.
Which WMIs and models does NHTSA list for Lamborghini?
Three, all registered to Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.: ZHW for passenger cars, ZPB for multipurpose vehicles (the Urus), and ZA9A12. That last one is a six-character code: under 49 CFR 565.15, a 9 in position 3 means positions 12 to 14 finish the manufacturer code, a format for low-volume manufacturers.
vPIC lists 10 Lamborghini model names, including the Diablo, Murcielago, Gallardo, Aventador and Huracan as well as the Revuelto, Temerario and URUS. Its 2025 list has the Revuelto and URUS, and 2026 adds the Temerario. A Lamborghini older than the 1981 model year has a shorter chassis number; see the classic car VIN page.
Where is the VIN on a Lamborghini?
Federal rules put it where you can read it from outside, through the windshield next to the left pillar (49 CFR 565.13). It's also on the certification label in the driver's door opening, beside the month and year of manufacture (49 CFR 567.4), and on the title and registration. Paint and interior choices aren't in the VIN; for the paint code, see where to find the paint code. Selling a Lamborghini? How to sell a car covers the paperwork.
