Land Rover and Range Rover VINs: what the decoder returns
Paste the 17 characters and the decoder checks them, then reads the record Jaguar Land Rover gave NHTSA's vPIC database: model year, model, trim, body class, drive type, engine size, cylinders and fuel, transmission, GVWR, doors, the plant and the air bags. NHTSA recall campaigns for that model and year are listed with it; NHTSA's VIN recall search or a Land Rover retailer can say whether one particular vehicle still needs the repair.
Range Rover isn't a separate make in the VIN system. vPIC files the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque under the make Land Rover, and their VINs start with the same SAL code, so a Range Rover VIN decodes right here.
How to read a Land Rover VIN
Jaguar Land Rover files a VIN sheet with NHTSA for each model line. This table follows the one for the 2027 Discovery, filed July 1, 2026:

Other model lines have their own position 4 letter and position 5 to 8 codes. The decoder reads them from JLR's vPIC data, so this page doesn't guess at them.
Example: the three 2027 Discovery codes
JLR's sheet lists three codes for positions 5 to 8 on the 2027 Discovery. Only the first character changes, which makes position 5 the trim on this model:
- J4EU: P360 S.
- 14EU: P360 Landmark.
- W4EU: Limited Edition Tempest.
All three share the rest: a 3.0L inline-six (AJ20P6) gasoline mild hybrid rated at 355 hp, an 8-speed automatic with all-wheel drive, a five-door body with seven seats, a GVWR range of 7,001 to 8,000 lb, and frontal air bags for driver and passenger plus side inflatable restraints for all three rows.
Put together, a 2027 Discovery P360 S built in Nitra reads SALRJ4EU?V2 followed by a six-digit serial, with ? standing for the check digit. That's a reading of the sheet, not a real VIN.
A real Land Rover VIN decoded: 2023 Defender 110
This 2023 Defender 110 went through an NHTSA crash test (test 15489), and the test record lists its VIN. NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for SALEJ7EXXP2148570:

vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list. The check digit in position 9 is X: the weighted sum of the other characters leaves a remainder of 10, which a VIN writes as X.
Land Rover or Jaguar? The third character
Jaguar Land Rover uses three WMIs in vPIC: SAL for Land Rover, SAJ for Jaguar passenger cars and SAD for Jaguar SUVs. JLR lays out Jaguar VINs the same way. Its sheet for the 2028 Jaguar Type 01, filed October 8, 2026, uses SAJ, E in position 4 for the Type 01, four-character codes such as 94T1 in positions 5 to 8, W for 2028 and A for Solihull.

These are the plant letters vPIC returns for SAL VINs. The 2027 Discovery sheet lists Nitra; the Jaguar Type 01 sheet gives JLR's Solihull site on Lode Lane for plant A.
Land Rover models in vPIC
vPIC lists seven Land Rover models for 2026: the Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar. Its all-years list of 12 adds the Freelander, LR2, LR3, LR4 and New Range Rover.
Where is the VIN on a Land Rover?
- Windshield: at the base on the driver's side, readable from outside, as federal rules require (49 CFR 565.13).
- Door opening: on the certification label at the driver's door edge or pillar (49 CFR 567.4).
- Documents: the title, registration and insurance card.
