How to read a Maserati VIN
Maserati North America filed the 2026 tables for the GranTurismo, GranCabrio, Grecale and MC20 with NHTSA in January 2026. Each table follows the same plan, with one twist for the Grecale in position 4:
| Position | What Maserati codes | 2026 codes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Manufacturer and vehicle type | ZAM: Maserati S.p.A., passenger car (GranTurismo, GranCabrio, MC20). ZN6: Maserati S.p.A., MPV (Grecale) |
| 4 | Restraint system | Cars: A to D for the airbag setup, plus E for four-point belts on the MC20. Grecale: one letter for weight class and airbags together |
| 5 to 7 | Brand, model, series, drive and body | M for Maserati, then the model and series: MV GranTurismo, MX GranCabrio, MR MC20 coupe, MS MC20 Cielo, MD Grecale |
| 8 | Engine | B: 3.0-liter V6 in the cars. C: 3.0-liter V6 and A: 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the Grecale. 1, 2 and 3: electric |
| 9 | Check digit | 0 to 9 or X |
| 10 | Model year | T: 2026, V: 2027, W: 2028 |
| 11 | Plant | X: Mirafiori. 0: Modena. 7: Cassino. All in Italy |
| 12 | First serial character | 0 to 9, then A to Z |
| 13 to 17 | Rest of the serial | Numbers only |
Every engine in these tables is turbocharged, except the electric drives.
Maserati model codes in positions 5 to 7
Positions 5 to 7 are where a Maserati VIN gets specific. M is the brand, the second letter is the model and body, and the third is the series. Every GranTurismo, GranCabrio and Grecale code sits in the all-wheel-drive column of Maserati's tables, and every MC20 code in the rear-wheel-drive column.
| Code | Model in Maserati's tables | Body and drive |
|---|---|---|
| MVB | GranTurismo | 2-door coupe, AWD |
| MVD | GranTurismo Trofeo | 2-door coupe, AWD |
| MVE | GranTurismo Folgore (electric) | 2-door coupe, AWD |
| MXB | GranCabrio | 2-door convertible, AWD |
| MXD | GranCabrio Trofeo | 2-door convertible, AWD |
| MXE | GranCabrio Folgore (electric) | 2-door convertible, AWD |
| MRA | MC20 | 2-door coupe, RWD |
| MRB | GT2 Stradale | 2-door coupe, RWD |
| MRC | MCPura | 2-door coupe, RWD |
| MSA | MC20 Cielo | 2-door convertible, RWD |
| MSC | MCPura Cielo | 2-door convertible, RWD |
| MSD | Folgore | 2-door convertible, RWD |
| MDA | Grecale: 300 or 330 cv for 2026, 390 cv for 2027 | 4-door SUV, AWD |
| MDB | Grecale Modena, 250 or 330 cv (2026) | 4-door SUV, AWD |
| MDD | Grecale Trofeo | 4-door SUV, AWD |
| MDE | Grecale BEV Performance (electric) | 4-door SUV, AWD |
| MDF | Grecale, 250 cv (2026) | 4-door SUV, AWD |
| MDG | Grecale Modena S, marked 'TBC' and US only for 2026; Modena, 390 cv, for 2027 | 4-door SUV, AWD |
cv is the metric horsepower figure Maserati's tables use. The 2026 Grecale table covers Europe and North America; the 2027 table, filed in October 2026, covers North America only.
Example: how a 2027 Grecale Trofeo VIN reads
Maserati's filings give patterns, not full VINs, so here is a 2027 Grecale Trofeo built from the 2027 table. The question marks are the check digit and the serial, which differ on every car: ZN6PMDDC?V7??????
- ZN6: Maserati S.p.A., multipurpose passenger vehicle.
- P: 5,001 to 6,000 lb, with front airbags and side airbags in all rows.
- MDD: Grecale Trofeo, 4-door SUV, all-wheel drive, left-hand drive.
- C: turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, listed at 287 to 390 kW.
- V: model year 2027.
- 7: built in Cassino, Italy.
The electric Grecale reads ZN6RMDE2?V7?????? instead: R for 6,001 to 7,000 lb with side airbags in all rows, MDE for BEV Performance and 2 for a 410 kW electric drive. Enter your own VIN in the decoder above to see NHTSA's decode.
A real Maserati VIN decoded: 2024 Grecale GT
A dealer in New Jersey listed this 2024 Grecale GT for sale with its VIN on the listing. NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for ZN6PMDAA2R7455338:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2024 Maserati Grecale GT (series 2: M182) |
| Body and drive | SUV, 4 doors, all-wheel drive |
| Engine | 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (vPIC lists 221 to 243 kW) |
| Plant | Cassino, Frosinone, Italy |
| GVWR | Class 1D: 5,001 to 6,000 lb |
| Airbags | Front and side (all rows) |
| Listed as standard | Automatic emergency braking, pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and rear automatic braking |
| Listed as optional | Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert |
vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list. Items listed as optional may or may not be fitted to this car; the VIN can't tell.
Is my Grecale a four-cylinder, a V6 or electric?
Check position 8. Maserati's 2026 Grecale table lists three engines: A, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder at 184, 224 or 243 kW; C, a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 at 294, 360 or 390 kW; and 2, an electric drive at 410 kW. The 2027 table for North America lists only C and 2, and its Grecale and Modena codes both carry 390 cv.
Position 4 on a Grecale is also unusual. On Maserati's cars it only describes the airbags, but on the Grecale one letter covers the weight class too. In the 2026 grid, a 5,001 to 6,000 lb Grecale with side airbags in all rows is P, and a 6,001 to 7,000 lb one is R. The 2027 table lists P for the Grecale and Trofeo, R for the BEV Performance and C for the Modena.
Where was my Maserati built, and why does the serial have a letter?
Position 11 is the plant. Maserati's 2026 tables list X for Mirafiori and 0 for Modena on the GranTurismo and GranCabrio, 0 for Modena on the MC20 and 7 for Cassino on the Grecale, so two GranTurismos of the same year can carry different plant codes.
The serial runs from position 12 to 17, and Maserati's position 12 counts 0 to 9 and then A to Z. A letter there is normal. Federal rules only require the last five characters to be numbers on cars and on MPVs rated at 10,000 lb or less (49 CFR 565.15(d)), and Maserati keeps positions 13 to 17 numeric.
Where is the VIN on a Maserati?
Stand outside next to the driver's side windshield pillar and look through the glass. Federal rules put a Maserati's VIN inside the cabin, readable from that spot in characters at least 4 mm tall (49 CFR 565.13(f)). It also appears on the certification label at the driver's door-latch post, hinge pillar or door edge (49 CFR 567.4), and on the title and registration.
Maserati models in NHTSA's database
vPIC lists 15 Maserati models under make ID 443: 228, 430, Biturbo, Coupe, Ghibli, Grancabrio, Granturismo, Grecale, Levante, MC20, MCPura, Merak, Quattroporte, Spyder and TC. It lists three manufacturer codes for Maserati S.p.A. in Italy: ZAM and ZC2 for passenger cars, and ZN6 for MPVs.
Other Italian makes have their own codes, such as ZDM on a Ducati. See the Ducati VIN decoder, the Alfa Romeo VIN decoder and the Ferrari VIN decoder.
