Why does a Ferrari VIN have stars at each end?
Ferrari's VIN breakdowns say it plainly: the VIN always begins and finishes with a star. The stars mark where the number starts and stops; they aren't part of it. This Ferrari VIN decoder takes the 17 characters between them, so enter ZFF10XLA8V0000001 without the star at either end. Typed with the stars, it's 19 characters and fails the length check before anything is looked up.
How to read a Ferrari VIN
Ferrari uses a two-digit model code where most makers use letters, and position 8 is the same on every car built for the US. The chart walks through ZFF10XLA8V0000001, a test VIN we built from Ferrari's 2027 breakdown with a computed check digit. It follows the format; it isn't a real car.
| Position | What Ferrari codes there | In ZFF10XLA8V0000001 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manufacturer identifier, assigned by CUNA, the Italian Technical Committee for Vehicle Unification | Z |
| 2 | Manufacturer identifier, 2nd character | F |
| 3 | Manufacturer identifier, 3rd character: ZFF is Ferrari S.p.A.'s code for passenger cars | F |
| 4 | Model type, 1st digit | 1 |
| 5 | Model type, 2nd digit: 10 is the 12Cilindri | 0 |
| 6 | Engine type: X is the F140HD 6.5L V12 | X |
| 7 | Restraint system: L covers the 12Cilindri, F80, 849 Testarossa and 296 Speciale | L |
| 8 | A: North America specification (USA, Puerto Rico and Canada) | A |
| 9 | Check digit | 8 |
| 10 | Model year: V is 2027 | V |
| 11 | Plant: 0 is Maranello | 0 |
| 12 | Production sequence number, 1st digit | 0 |
| 13 | Production sequence number | 0 |
| 14 | Production sequence number | 0 |
| 15 | Production sequence number | 0 |
| 16 | Production sequence number | 0 |

NHTSA's vPIC database decodes this test VIN as a 2027 12Cilindri: 6.5L V12, 814 hp, 2-door coupe with 2 seats, GVWR class 1C (4,001 to 5,000 lb), built in Maranello, destination market U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada.
Ferrari model codes for 2027
Positions 4 and 5 name the model, position 6 the engine and position 7 the restraint system. Ferrari's 2027 breakdowns, filed June 30, 2026, list these. Lamborghini, by contrast, codes the model in positions 7 and 8; see the Lamborghini VIN decoder.
| Positions 4 and 5 | Model | Engine (position 6) | Restraints (position 7) | Body and seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 12Cilindri | X: F140HD 6.5L V12, 814 hp | L | Coupe, 2 seats |
| 11 | 12Cilindri Spider | X: F140HD 6.5L V12, 814 hp | M | Convertible, 2 seats |

Did Ferrari VIN codes change for 2027?
Not for the models that carried over: 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17 mean the same cars in Ferrari's 2026 and 2027 breakdowns. What changed is the list. The 2026 breakdown also had:
- 09: Roma Spider, engine R (F154BH 3.9L V8, 612 hp), restraints P.
- 99: 296 GTB, engine S (F163BC 3.0L V6, 654 hp, plus an electric motor), restraints L.
- 01: 296 GTS, engine S, restraints M.
Those codes are gone from the 2027 chart, which adds 18, 19, 20 and 21. Read positions 4 and 5 with the year in position 10. NHTSA's database also keeps some names short: our 2026 296 GTB test VIN, ZFF99SLA7T0000001, decoded as model "296", with "F171 KAA (296 GTB)" in the series field.
What does a Ferrari VIN decode show?

vPIC also returns the restraint description Ferrari filed for each code, word for word.
A real Ferrari VIN decoded: 2018 488 GTB
Ferrari listed this 2018 488 GTB's VIN as the first in one of the VIN ranges in its recall report to NHTSA (recall 19V-090, for a fuel vapor separator that may crack and leak fuel). NHTSA's vPIC database returns this for ZFF79ALAXJ0231425:
| Field | vPIC result |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | 2018 Ferrari 488 (series: GTB) |
| Body | Coupe, 2 doors |
| Engine | 3.9L V8 (engine code F154CB), 660 hp, 7-speed |
| Plant | Maranello, Italy |
| Airbags | Front and side (row 1) |
vPIC's airbag and safety fields can be incomplete; the window sticker or owner's manual has the full list. The check digit in position 9 is X: the weighted sum of the other characters leaves a remainder of 10, which a VIN writes as X.
Which WMIs and models does NHTSA list for Ferrari?
Three. ZFF and ZSG belong to Ferrari S.p.A. in Italy, for passenger cars and multipurpose vehicles. ZFD is registered to Ferrari North America, Inc. as a passenger car code. All three decode as Ferrari.
vPIC knows 66 Ferrari model names, from the 308GTB, Mondial 8 and Testarossa through the F40, Enzo and La Ferrari to the Amalfi and Luce. Its 2025 list has the 12Cilindri, 296, Daytona SP3, Roma, SF90 and Purosangue; the 2026 list adds the 296 Speciale, 296 Speciale A, 849 Testarossa and F80, and drops the Daytona SP3 and SF90. The decoder handles 17-character VINs, the format used from the 1981 model year; older Ferraris carry shorter chassis numbers, covered on the classic car VIN page.
Where is the VIN on a Ferrari?
On the dashboard, readable through the windshield next to the left pillar, as 49 CFR 565.13 requires. On the certification label in the driver's door opening, with the month and year of manufacture (49 CFR 567.4). And on the title and registration. Wherever it appears with stars, copy only what's between them. Paint isn't coded in the VIN; see where to find the paint code.
What can't a Ferrari VIN tell you?
Options and personalization. Paint, interior and equipment packages aren't coded; the VIN covers model, engine, restraints, market, year and plant. Position 8 is A on cars built to North American specification, and Ferrari's US filings don't describe cars built for other markets. The VIN isn't a service or ownership history either. The decoder shows the vPIC decode and any open NHTSA recalls for the VIN. Selling one? Start with how to sell a car.
