Mopar VIN decoder

One Mopar VIN decoder for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram: enter a 17-character VIN for the year, brand, model, engine and plant from NHTSA's vPIC data. Classic Mopars from before 1981 need other records, and this page explains why.

On most cars and light trucks it's on the dashboard, readable through the windshield on the driver's side. It's also on the label in the driver's door opening and on the title, registration and insurance card.

Mopar VIN lookup: which brand is it really?

Mopar is Stellantis's parts and service brand, so no VIN says Mopar. A Mopar VIN lookup is really a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram or Plymouth VIN, and this decoder reads all of them. The result names the actual make, along with the model year, model, trim, engine, drive and the plant, from NHTSA's vPIC data.

Modern Mopar VINs make the brand easy to spot. Stellantis puts all four brands on shared codes such as 1C4 and 3C6, then uses position 5 for the brand: C for Chrysler, D for Dodge, J for Jeep and R for Ram. Older VINs use a separate WMI for each brand.

The first character is the builder's country: 1 and 4 for the United States, 2 for Canada, 3 for Mexico. The third is the vehicle type, such as 3 for a car, 4 for an MPV, 6 for a truck and 7 for an incomplete vehicle.

Where 2027 Mopar vehicles are built (position 11)

Position 11 is the plant. Stellantis's 2027 guide assigns these:

CJefferson North Assembly, DetroitDodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee

Older VINs name plants that aren't on this list, such as D for Belvidere, Illinois, X for St. Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri, F for Newark, Delaware, K for Pillette Road in Windsor and M for Lago Alberto in Mexico City. The decoder reads those from vPIC too.

Example: a 1985 Dodge Ram Van VIN

Here is a Mopar from the early years of the 17-character VIN. 2B7HB23H1FK265009 was on a GSA Auctions listing as a 1985 Ram Van, and vPIC agrees:

PositionCharacterWhat vPIC reads
1 to 32B7Dodge truck, FCA Canada
4 to 8HB23HRam Van, series B250, cargo van, 3.7L six-cylinder with a one-barrel carburetor, GVWR 6,001 to 7,000 lb
91Check digit, correct
10FModel year 1985
11KPillette Road Assembly, Windsor, Ontario
12 to 17265009Plant sequence number

F can mean 1985 or 2015. For cars, MPVs and light trucks, a number in position 7 (here a 3) puts the year in the 1980 to 2009 range, under the rule in 49 CFR 565.15. vPIC still adds a caution that the year may be off, which you can ignore when the title agrees.

Classic Mopar VINs and fender tags: what this tool can't do

NHTSA's decoder stops at the 1981 model year: enter an earlier year and vPIC answers with a pre-1981 decode error. Muscle-car-era Mopars also predate the 17-character standard, so their VINs don't follow the federal layout the decoder reads. This page won't decode a 1970 Dodge Challenger or a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner.

It also doesn't read fender tags or broadcast sheets. Those are factory build records, not VINs, and vPIC holds nothing about them. We'd rather say that plainly than guess at codes.

For a pre-1981 car, the classic car VIN guide covers where those numbers live and what they can and can't prove.

Where is the VIN on a Mopar?

On anything built for the 1981 model year or later: at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the certification label in the driver's door opening, and on the title and registration. The windshield spot is required on cars, MPVs and trucks up to 10,000 lb GVWR (49 CFR 565.13); the door label is set by 49 CFR 567.4.

Common questions

Is there a VIN that says Mopar?

No. Mopar is Stellantis's parts and service brand, not a make. The VIN names Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Plymouth or Eagle, and the decoder shows that make.

Can I decode a 1970 Mopar VIN here?

No. NHTSA's vPIC data starts with the 1981 model year, and pre-1981 VINs don't follow the 17-character format. The tool rejects them rather than guess.

What does the 5th character mean on a Mopar VIN?

On current Stellantis VINs it is the brand: C for Chrysler, D for Dodge, J for Jeep and R for Ram. Older VINs use a brand-specific WMI in positions 1 to 3 instead.

Can a VIN tell me a Mopar's paint code or options?

No. The VIN covers type, restraints, brand, model, drive, series, engine, year and plant. Paint codes are on a separate label; see where to find your paint code.

Does this work on Plymouth and Eagle VINs?

For 1981 and later, yes, when vPIC has data for that VIN. Both brands have their own WMIs in vPIC, such as 1P3 for Plymouth cars and 1E3 for Eagle.
