How to work out Florida sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Florida the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 6% = $1,500 at the state rate, plus any county or city tax where you register the car.
6% state plus the county discretionary sales surtax of the buyer's home county, which applies only to the first $5,000 of the price; so the general combined average (6.98%) overstates vehicle tax and is omitted.
Trade-ins
Tax is paid on the price of the new article less the credit for the used article taken in trade (s. 212.09(1), F.S.).
Leasing a car in Florida
Tax on each monthly payment. Florida: leases of tangible personal property, including vehicles, are taxed at 6% (plus surtax) on each lease or rental payment when due (Rule 12A-1.071); the $5,000 surtax limit applies per payment. The lease calculator uses Florida's method when you pick the state.
