How to work out Georgia sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Georgia the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 7% = $1,750 at the state rate.
One-time 7.0% TAVT on fair market value instead of sales tax (rate in effect on purchase date). New vehicles: FMV is the greater of the retail selling price (including delivery, freight and doc fees) or the state assessment manual value; used vehicles: the assessment manual value. TAVT is a single statewide rate (state and local shares are split internally).
Trade-ins
DOR TAVT FAQ: a reduction is made for the trade-in when the sale is made by a dealer (not in private sales). Dealer rebates or cash discounts also reduce FMV on new vehicles.
Leasing a car in Georgia
Tax on all the payments, due at signing. Georgia: TAVT is paid up front at titling; for most consumer leases (depreciation method, HB 340, 2017) the base is the lease depreciation plus amortized amounts and down payments, less trade-in and rebates, and business leases with rent adjustment may use the agreed upon value. The lease calculator uses Georgia's method when you pick the state.
Dealer doc fees
No state cap found; DOR includes doc fees in the TAVT selling price for new vehicles.
