How to work out Idaho sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Idaho the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 6% = $1,500 at the state rate.
6% statewide; only a few resort-city local option taxes exist, so treat vehicle tax as 6%. Manufacturer rebates reduce the price only if paid to the dealer.
Trade-ins
A dealer may reduce the taxable price by a trade-in only when it is taken into resale inventory as part of the same sale, documented at that time (Idaho Tax Commission dealer guidance). No trade-in credit in private sales.
Leasing a car in Idaho
Tax on each monthly payment. Idaho: leasing a vehicle is a taxable sale, and the lessor collects 6% sales tax on each lease payment received (IDAPA 35.01.02.106). The lease calculator uses Idaho's method when you pick the state.
