How to work out Kansas sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Kansas the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 6.5% = $1,625 at the state rate, plus any county or city tax where you register the car.
6.5% state plus local (city/county) sales tax at the dealer's location rate for dealer sales. Administrative and handling (doc) fees are taxable. Property tax is also due at registration.
Trade-ins
Dealers charge sales tax on the net price after the trade-in allowance, if the traded vehicle goes into the dealer's resale inventory (KDOR Pub. KS-1526).
Leasing a car in Kansas
Tax on each monthly payment. Kansas: leases with periodic payments are taxed on each payment at the rate where the vehicle is primarily located; leases with no periodic payments are taxed where the customer takes delivery (KDOR Pub. KS-1526). The lease calculator uses Kansas's method when you pick the state.
Dealer doc fees
No cap found; KDOR treats admin/handling fees as taxable.
