How to work out Mississippi sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Mississippi the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 5% = $1,250 at the state rate.
5% for cars, vans, buses and trucks under 10,000 lbs (3% for heavier trucks carrying property), not the 7% general rate. DOR's FAQ mentions no local sales tax on vehicle purchases; annual ad valorem tax is separate.
Trade-ins
Tax applies to the net purchase price after dealer discounts and trade-ins; manufacturer rebates are not deducted (DOR motor vehicle FAQ).
Leasing a car in Mississippi
Tax on each monthly payment. Mississippi: rentals and leases of vehicles are taxed at the 5% sales tax rate on the rental/lease payments (Miss. Code 27-65-23); short rentals also pay the 6% motor vehicle rental tax. The lease calculator uses Mississippi's method when you pick the state.
