How to work out Nebraska sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Nebraska the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 5.5% = $1,375 at the state rate, plus any county or city tax where you register the car.
5.5% state plus local sales tax, reported on Form 6 and paid to the county treasurer within 30 days.
Trade-ins
Form 6 tax base = total sales price less trade-in allowance less manufacturer rebate assigned to the dealer; the trade-in must be titled to the buyer and taken at the time of sale; a returned leased vehicle earns no trade-in allowance.
Leasing a car in Nebraska
Tax on each monthly payment. Nebraska: lessors are retailers that collect state and local sales tax on lease payments; for leases of one year or more the lessor may instead elect to pay tax on the vehicle's cost when buying it (Lessor's Option) (DOR Form 6 and leasing guide). The lease calculator uses Nebraska's method when you pick the state.
