How to work out Nevada sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Nevada the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 6.85% = $1,712.50 at the state rate, plus any county or city tax where you register the car.
6.85% statewide minimum (state 2% plus mandatory local school and county taxes), plus county options up to about 8.375%; the buyer's county rate applies. Private-party sales are not taxed. Governmental services tax is charged separately at registration.
Trade-ins
Gross receipts and sales price exclude the allowance a retailer gives for a used vehicle taken in trade on another vehicle (NRS 372.025(3)(e), 372.065(3)(e)). Trading in a leased vehicle does not affect the computation.
Leasing a car in Nevada
Tax on each monthly payment. Nevada: a lease is a sale (NRS 372.060), and a lessor that buys vehicles for lease under a resale certificate may elect to pay tax on the rental charges instead of the purchase price (NRS 372.240), so tax is normally charged on each payment. The lease calculator uses Nevada's method when you pick the state.
