How to work out New York sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In New York the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 4% = $1,000 at the state rate, plus any county or city tax where you register the car.
4% state plus local tax for where the buyer lives (combined roughly 7% to 8.875%, including the 0.375% MCTD surcharge in the NYC metro area).
Trade-ins
The credit the dealer gives for a vehicle taken in trade (to be resold, even to a scrap yard) is excluded from the taxable amount (Tax Dept. Pub 838 example: price minus $8,500 trade-in).
Leasing a car in New York
Tax on all the payments, due at signing. New York: for leases of one year or more, all lease receipts for the whole term are deemed paid at inception and the dealer collects tax on them then (Tax Law 1111(i); Pub 838; TSB-A-24(25)S). The lease calculator uses New York's method when you pick the state.
Dealer doc fees
15 NYCRR Part 78 (DMV regulation): the optional dealer registration/title processing fee is $175 maximum and must be labeled as not a DMV fee (read via a regulation copy; DMV page not reached).
