How to work out Oklahoma sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. Oklahoma taxes the full price, even with a trade-in.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $30,000 x 3.25% = $975 at the state rate.
Excise split: new vehicles 3.25% of value; used vehicles $20 on the first $1,500 of value plus 3.25% of the remainder (68 O.S. 2103). State law also applies a 1.25% sales tax to motor vehicle sales with no local sales tax (68 O.S. 1355), giving about 4.5% total for a new vehicle.
Trade-ins
No credit: from July 1, 2026, HB 1183 (signed May 2025) bases the excise tax on the actual sales price before any discounts or credits for a trade-in, which must be within 20% of average retail value. HB 2952 (2026) would restore a deduction but was only introduced.
Leasing a car in Oklahoma
Tax on the car's price, due at signing. Oklahoma: the lessor titles the vehicle and pays the excise tax on its value at titling, which is passed into the lease. The lease calculator uses Oklahoma's method when you pick the state.
