How to work out Oregon sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. Oregon taxes the full price, even with a trade-in.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $30,000 x 0.5% = $150 at the state rate.
No sales tax. 0.5% vehicle privilege tax on the retail sales price of vehicles bought from a dealer that have 7,500 miles or less (or an MCO), GVWR 26,000 lbs or less, and were never titled/registered in Oregon. Most used vehicles from dealers owe nothing. Doc fees, warranties and gap are excluded from the base.
Trade-ins
Trade-ins and cash down payments are not subtracted from the retail sales price for the privilege tax (Oregon DOR); separately stated discounts and rebates are.
Leasing a car in Oregon
Tax on the car's price, due at signing. Oregon: no tax on lease payments; the 0.5% privilege tax applies to the dealer's sale to the lessor, on the agreed upon value stated in the lease (Oregon DOR), and is typically passed into the lease. The lease calculator uses Oregon's method when you pick the state.
Dealer doc fees
ORS 822.043(4) (last amended 2025 c.415): document processing fee may not exceed $250 if the dealer uses an integrator, or $200 if not; the fee is negotiable.
