How to work out South Dakota sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In South Dakota the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 4% = $1,000 at the state rate.
4% excise on the purchase price at titling instead of sales tax (SDCL 32-5B-1); no local add-on. Vehicles 11+ model years old sold for $2,500 or less (before trade-in) are exempt.
Trade-ins
The credit or trade-in value allowed by the seller is deducted from total consideration to establish the purchase price (SDCL 32-5B-4; ARSD 64:29:02:04.01). Total consideration includes administrative fees and rebates.
Leasing a car in South Dakota
Tax on all the payments, due at signing. South Dakota: for a closed-end lease the 4% excise is due at titling on the total of all lease payments plus cash, rebates, net trade-in and fees; for an open-end lease it is due on the vehicle's purchase price plus those items (DOR motor vehicle lease fact sheet). The lease calculator uses South Dakota's method when you pick the state.
Dealer doc fees
No cap found; administrative fees are part of taxable consideration.
