How to work out Wisconsin sales tax on a car
Multiply the taxable price by the rate. In Wisconsin the trade-in comes off first.
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade: $25,000 x 5% = $1,250 at the state rate, plus any county or city tax where you register the car.
5% state plus 0.5% county tax (and Milwaukee city/county taxes) based on where the vehicle is customarily kept. Dealer service fees for required forms are taxable; the electronic title/registration filing fee is not.
Trade-ins
WI DOR Pub 202: if the sale and trade-in are one transaction, the taxable price does not include the trade-in allowance. An owned trade on a lease reduces the taxable lease payments.
Leasing a car in Wisconsin
Tax on each monthly payment. Wisconsin: each periodic lease payment is taxable, and cash capitalized cost reductions paid at signing are taxable too (Pub 202 example: $2,000 cap reduction and each $350 payment taxed). The lease calculator uses Wisconsin's method when you pick the state.
